Been weighing up getting a Synology or similar, versus building my own NAS/home server. Decided to DIY it and be able to use some existing components that way.

Got the server chassis first of all - important for me that I was able to use a spare SeaSonic ATX PSU I have, plus have plenty of space for NAS drives.

This bad boy - bought elsewhere so can't link a competitor - was £80. Space for up to 8x 3.5 drives and 3x 5.25 drives. Takes a standard ATX PSU and upto an ATX or CEB motherboard. Absolutely cavernous and built like a tank.

Undecided as to whether to stick say, Ubuntu Server on there, or whether to just stick FreeNAS or OpenMediaVault on there. As well as being a home server/NAS, it's going to act as a Plex server and store footage from a home CCTV system.

Might have been able to get a small QNAP/Synology cheaper, depending upon what I stick in it - but won't have the flexibility nor the drive capacity.

Bought three of these from OCUK:

And also some Be-Quiet Silent Wings 3 fans for front cooling (got some 80mm Noctua redux fans on order for the rear cooling):

Undecided as to what to do for motherboard/RAM/processor etc as that will be influenced by the Ryzen 3000 launch today ;);););)

I'd be tempted to say stick Debian/Ubuntu on there and learn (if you don't already know) how to use Webmin/usermin as well just for the sheer flexibility and customisation possible but that is fairly advanced and very non-trivial to setup versus using FreeNAS or similar.

It's been quite a while since I've done anything with Linux or Unix, as I gave up working in IT years ago. Last release of Ubuntu that I touched was Dapper Drake :D
