Kitchen work surfaces make good desks and they are cheap.

If you want, you can be creative and saw a little caving for your legs to fit in

If your house is big enough, use a mini like those folks did on grand designs

I built mine out of OSB topped with laminate flooring!

Here it is just after I built it hence the mess (although it's no tidier now), It still needs edging tbh, just ain't got round to it.

Depending on how much you want to spend (and how good you are at woodwork) get yourself a real wood worktop and cut it to a nice shape and finish it off with a french polish. It's what we did for my desk and it's excellent. I did post a photo of it somewhere (in the desks thread i'm sure) but the post seems to have vanished...

Took a couple of days to make but from scratch is very good if you need it in a fiddly place!
