As the title says, I'm planning on building a new PC in a month or 2 (returning to the UK). I'm reasonably happy with putting it together myself, but am trying to get ideas/tips on a solid build.

Budget is going to be somewhere between £1000-£1200 I guess, but will need to include peripherals and monitor(s).

It's going to be used for work, gaming and probably some amateur video editing/screen recording.

I was looking at going for a ryzen build, with a new b450 motherboard (I know they aren't released yet, but would imagine they should be by then).

Would like to be able to play latest releases etc, but not too worried if they aren't all at ultra settings 4k etc.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Advice?

Cheers, I know things can change, but figured I may as well start getting a skeleton of an idea together.

Was also looking at the StoreMI thing.

Has anyone taken a decent look at it here? I was thinking of going with a 500gb SSD as primary, then just picking up a cheap 2nd hand 500gb from CEX for general storage. However if the StoreMI is decent, I thought perhaps a 256gb SSD with a 1tb hardrive might work out better?

Wow, nice build for the budget! I've seen people complaining about 4k on a 24 inch monitor though? Everything is simply too small (I'm sure it can be adjusted though). Would hopefully be able to save a bit on a b450 motherboard come build time too.

Primarily it'll be a work computer, gaming will be secondary. No need for 144hz etc, I'm going to be very much a casual gamer rather than high paced esports!

So that month is up, will start looking to purchase within 2 weeks.

Been reconsidering my options a bit. I've started to wonder if I'm not better off going with a b350 and 1700, but investing a bit more on longer term parts than I planned on doing so. Been looking at a 1440p 75hz ips moniter, I figure it's a decent balance between gaming and work, and at around £330. Also been considering a meshify c case, along with a couple of extra fans. Basically getting the bits that should last for generations in place, with the idea of upgrading processor and motherboard in another 3+ years. Thinking an rx580 8gb (about 240 for the cheapest), which should be able to drive most games if at semi reasonable settings I think?

I've built up the rough build in my basket (don't have the addon to put it here), and it's coming in a bit over budget, but some parts are available elsewhere (and the monitor is a fill-in and 100 over the monitor I'm looking at).

Thoughts?

Advice is to wait.
B450 boards are coming out soon, and you can get 2700/X with b450.
Also there's a 32inch IPS 1440p 75hz with freesync (for £220!) coming out at the end of the month
You can pair that with the rx580 8gb and that's you sorted for quite a while

I'm happy to consider b450, but just figured I could push the cpu hard, and upgrade in 3 years to whatever amd released in 2020.

What's the monitor??? I've got to work on it, and 32 sounds ridiculously huge for that, but I'd get used to it...

I have to say, I think I'm getting convinced... it's a basic model I guess, but it's got every feature I want. It's just huge... guess I can have two browsers open next to each other and have good real estate on each...

Going to have to really consider where exactly I'm going to be working with that thing though!

OK, so here's my basket. Filler used in the monitor, for what should be a similar price to the 32 inch monstrosity (should be released end of this month right?).

Will consider swapping the b350 for the b450 if/when released in time. Decided to go with the 1700. I realise the 2600x is a similar price (or even cheaper), but I don't think the 1700 is going to be a serious limiting factor regardless, and the extra cores are probably going to be useful if I'm doing some video editing/streaming/recording. Taking into account that some items may be available for a little less elsewhere, this looks like it should come back to the £1200 budget I set myself, or at least damn close. Then in 3+ years, I can look to upgrade, though some parts may end up being donated to my boy, who'll be around 10 then.

The motherboard has support for 5 PWM fans, so the 3 pack I'm buying should be fine, but could someone clarify if the 2 fans included in the case will be a problem, surely it shouldn't be? I was planning 3 on the front (in), 1 on the back, and one on the top (both out). Should hopefully result in positive air pressure.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,276.16 (includes shipping: £15.30)

What's the advantage to the 2 140mm vs the 3 120s? Price is virtually identical, the 120mm can shift more air apparently (albeit slightly louder, but three of them running at a lower speed should work well no?). I've no idea how much sound is going to bother me to be honest!

PSU, I was looking at potentially having something that can handle a later, beefier GPU, in a few years time. Also considering trying to do a bit of overclocking, so again, PSU needs to cope. But if a 550W would be enough for all that, then I'm happy to save a few pennies!

Bundle looks tempting though, definitely a good price, though the hard drive is not as good.

Hmm, I like the look of that bundle, I have to admit. Would it be better to take a good x370 board over a b450 though? Would the b450 not better support the advantages of the 2XXX series? Or is it all bios updates?

Can see the sense in downgrading to the 550W, saves a few pennies. As for the case, I can get the Mesh C for £10 less in the rainforest, and it comes with an extra fan anyway, and from what I've read, it gets rave reviews as a great all rounder?

EDIT - Out of interest where are people looking to buy the AOC Q3279VWFD8?

Is there any difference between ram speeds and clock speeds between the motherboards? Or is that all bios/CPU based?

Great. So having just about grasped what phases do and why they're important, and now you're telling me the companies are lying to me :D.

Just noticed the 2700X bundle comes with better ram than what I had selected also...

Think I may just take the hit and buy that bundle. The monitor is looking so far to be up for sale at less than the place filler I have in the build, so that'll save £20, another fifteen or so on the PSU, and then a bit more on the Meshify from the rainforest.

So I'd be looking at around £1300 rather than the targeted £1200 (which I'd missed anyway), but a significantly better machine (except for hard drive). My budget isn't a hard limit, and for that much improved a system, I think it's probably worth it.

Now to basically wait on the monitor, hope for some cracking deals in the coming 10 days on some bits, and perhaps see what happens with the bundles and the b450s.

Think I may just take the hit and buy that bundle. With some savings elsewhere, whilst I won't get down to £1200, it'll probably save me from needing to upgrade for a while longer. I wonder if there'll be updated bundles with the release of the b450s?

Would I really notice the difference between the 3200mhz teamgroup Dark ram, and the 3000mhz teamgroup vulcan? £35 cheaper, would it bring a worthwhile increase in speeds really?

Found the non-window version of the meshify c too, saves a few pennies, and I'm not too fussed about the glass. Seen a recommendation on the riotoro psu elsewhere, 650W (lowest gold class I found) saves a few more pennies.

Hmm, maybe I'll stick with the ram, keeps me a bit away from the bottom limit for freesync. That's a £1,352.17 spend including delivery, if everything comes from overclockers.

With prices elsewhere (and the riotoro psu), I can knock off about £60, and then it depends on the monitor, but I've seen it advertised (obviously not in stock) for about £20 less than the filler monitor included. Bringing below the £1300, might be other postage costs along the way though, but not too crazy I believe.

Trigger pulled. Went with the 3000mhz ram in the end, since that was what was in stock! Saved a few pennies though, and should bring the eventual build to around the £1250 mark.

All but power supply and monitor ordered from OCUK, found the riotoro 650 for £71 from the rainforest, that I get free next day delivery, so that's nice. Now just waiting for that monitor to get released! Should be in the next day or so I guess, the rainforest has them for sale, but a bit more costly than other options, perhaps release will see that drop. Remove delivery costs and they may still be competitive though.

Going to hook it up to a TV once I've got it all built I guess!

Will need to start watching a load of building PC youtube videos now. No doubt I'll be on here in near tears when something isn't working.

Not sure, AOC's is 3 years

https://eu.aoc.com/en/warranty

Acceptable is 1 full bright, 1 full black, 3 bright sub pixels, 5 black sub pixels, 5 total sub pixels. So I guess basically 2 fully defective pixels is send back time. Then a range in between. Looks pretty stringent to me, but I guess others may vary.
