Welcome to the forums, first of what will you be using your pc for, im guessing for gaming considering you picked a 8800GTS if so what res is your monitor. Also do you plan on overclocking at all, as you may need to invest in a good aftermarket CPU cooler such as a tuniq tower, 1 more thing whats your total budget?

I think this would be your best option.

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 320MB
(£202.09)
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit
(£88.11)
Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£93.99)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
(£143.34)

Sub Total : £448.96
Total : £537.22

You could also swap the 6600 for the 4300 to save a few more pennies. Whats your bugdet?? Could help people here a little more! ;)

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 320MB
(£202.09) why?
get the OC1 model and set the clock to same as OC2.
I swear they are the same just with a different bios with clock settings.

Hi and thanks, the computer we be used for gaming mostly,at present i have a XIOD LCD monitor which doesnt have a high res but will upgrade at a later date..possibly overclock but not vital if computer is running fast enough and dont as of yet have a budget...If there is little difference between cards then i will go for the OC1...

Thermaltake, you mentioned the Gigabyte mobo....to be honest ive never owned a gigabyte mobo in all my builds so cant say i know much about them....i want a modern board that will last and has lots of features which is why i was looking at the EVGA now they have bios flash sorted.....any advice?

That board is very expensive. It also doesn't support DDR3 which if you want it to last a long time might be a necessity. However, it does support SLI. But SLI wont be very well optimized for some time on DX10 and generaly the cards are to expensive to go for SLI unless you wait a while. if you wait a while then they are out of date lol!

Id suggest a P35 board. They are efficient and cheaper, yet will easily suffice for your needs and are better future proofed due to the fact you can use DDR3, as explained above, unless your loaded SLI is unlikely to be an option in DX10 for some time.

Gigabyte GA_P35_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

How about that one? You could go cheaper if you like.

OO and i just noticed it has "Ultimate graphics performance with dual PCI-E x16 interface" But i beleive its a crossfire board and wont work for SLI??

so basically in general its better to purchase a P35 board than a 680i board....

Cost at the moment however isnt really the issue i just wanna build a powerful up to date pc....as mentioned my current rig is AGP still and though runs okay on BF2142 i do need to update...

Yes much better choice.

Personally I'd opt for one of the new P35 motherboards and forget about SLI. You'd be better off getting the next generation of graphics card then bothering to upgrade to SLI with the increase in performance you'd get tbh

Something like the Gigabyte P35-DS3P should do fine :). Also make sure you wait for the July 22nd price cuts

Its good. But total overkill for the system you want to run. There is no need to pay that much. Spend a max of 100 quid on a mobo and get a GTX instead. Your graphix card will make more of a difference when playing games then any other part of your pc (as long as your cpu isn't horrible). There are a few exceptions such as supreme comander. But generaly people normaly suffer from graphics card bottle necking intead of CPU bottle necking.

:EDIT: Just checked and you should definitly not have trouble with bottlenecking. I hope your gona overclock that E6600 :P

Best is equivilant to your needs. Best is not the most expensive in your case.

How many hard drives do you have? if you have like 6 then youd need a more expensive motherboard to plug them all in. But really, who needs 6 i think its crazy that some have more then 3 really. I cant even use up 320GB lol. Just get bigger ones! lol.

Anyway, for you. Your many goal should really be to get a nice GTX instead of a GS. This means you dont need such a good motherboard. Everything else is nice, but if you save money by not wasting it you can put it to better use.

Let me give you a full spec.

Tell me what you need and a budget.

k well budget is probably around £900 mark....eventually i,ll need everything but at the moment was just working on modernising...
also whats a good case to get? i currently have a xaser3 but was looking at the stacker 830 evo...ive got 2 old WD sata 120 gigs which i never used on my old machine which is currently still serial lol...

Its been ages since i even thought about upgrading so just really trying to find out whats good on the market.

cheers.

So your looking for:

Case

Processor

graphics card

Ram

Motherboard

Is the 900 quid budget just for this?

I currently have a spec for case, processor, ram and motherboard for my self which is reaching around 600 quid. Im not possitive its the best but i like it.

I dont know a lot about cases as ive not tried them. But i read a lot of reviews and i dont really like the Lian looks. But i love the Antec P182. Ive only heard good things and serposidly its got excellent cooling and its sound proofed to a certain extent!

I have a picture of my current spec:

overclockersstage1.jpg

Total £655.51 (includes next day delivery)

You could shave near 150 quid off this as ive got a quad core. You only wanted a duel core. Plus the motherboard is quite expensive as i plan on heavly overclocking. The ram could also be about 20 quid cheaper if you went for 6400 as 8500 is not overly needed.

The quad cores will also come down in price to around 150-180 after 22 of july.

If you could shave enough off and extend your budget a bit you could get the same Graphx card as me as well:

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB(£370.11)

Of coarse you could just get the cheapest GTX and save your self some more:

OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3(£323.11)

Pay 30 quid more and you can get a differnt make with a 2 year warrenty.

There is a few differences in the makes. As you may have noticed as is the prices. The BFG's are overclocked and have lifetime warrenties. They are a bit faster but i suspect can be overclocked even more.

The EVGA have 10 year warrenties but arnt overclocked and are a bit cheaper.

The others have either 2 year warrenty or 1 year warrenty.

EDIT

The last one was my own spec, this is cheaper one aimed at you:

This is the cost of everything but the GFX card which is your choice. Id highly recommend the GTX now that you have over 370 quid spare on your budget.

cheers for all the advice....ive been looking at the GTX cards and personally i cant see there being much difference in overall performance at a standard resolution so probably go for 8800 GTS 640Mb which gives me some money towards a new LCD monitor as i need to update my current monitor too as its a 4 year old XIOD 17" i cant even find a driver for it so running on plug n play settings!!!

any recommendations for a good size monitor with high res?

as said its been some time since i last upgraded lol...

Can recommend what I currently use - Hyundai N91W 19" widescreen - looks swish, runs great esp over DVI - res might be a bit low for you though...how much are you thinking of spending on monitor?
