Building your own combined Router / NAS

i personally use VirtualPC, which i gather is very similar to vmware (although i've not tried the latter).
 
SME Server (contribs.org) or clarkconnect are 2 linux distro's specially designed as an all in one gateway with samaba etc installed already and nice web based setup/maintenance. IPCOP with a bunch of addons can do it too but is much more work. PC required I think is 400mhz with 256mb ram, if you don't have one I would suggest a mini-itx build using the cheapest VIA cpu option then the whole thing would be passively cooled although could easily add up to £350 once you have a teeny case and special custom psu ;)
