Now I'm not a noob as far as building PCs is concerned, as I've always built my own (since my SX back in 95) and have built for other people, but there's always been some irritating little problem. Anyways, just completed building and installing my new 'cheap' PC (low end core duo, cheap mobo, cheap gfx) and by the gods, everything just worked! I was a little dubious since there are no IDE drives at all (HD/DVD both SATA) and it was a cheap little mobo (£30) but it's working perfectly!

Just thought I'd share - it's brought back my self build confidence after 5 years of thinking 'No, I just can't face that again'!

Congrats!
I was quite surprised when i pressed the power button on a new build at christmas, and everythign powered up! joy :p

And unusual for me... there's always something I've forgotten/not considered/not bought...

I just love the smell of a newly installed PC in the morning. Smells like... victory ;)

I did once re-do the whole of my cabling in an old machine TWICE!!

Only to realise i had'nt switched the PSU on :o

I think PC components are getting better. Certainly the transition from jumpers to BIOSs has made a lot of difference. And my last build, no IDE drives, no legacy mouse/keyboard, and no floppy drives - and it booted first time (ok, second time, but it didn't like the PS2 keyboard).

Yeah, that's pretty much been my experience. It's 5 years since I did one from scratch and I was dreading it, but 4 hours (ish) and I have everything in, secured and o/s and applications installed.

Excellent, not just me then :p

I hate it when I forget that switch. Spending hours connecting everything, got it perfect, press the power button, and... nothing. Dead.

I've panicked so many times only to find it was that. :o

Let's not forget the ultimate 'idiot mistake' forgetting to plug the power cable into the GPU... I think I must make this mistake every time I'm meddling inside a computer.
I hoped I'd learn but for some reason it goes over my head every time.

My last build just worked as well. Been going for over a year now. Not the most stable build i've had mind and it just will not overclock even 1mhz without crashing (ds3 + 6300) :(

It's a great relief that you don't have to check for the 120/240v switch at the back of the PSU too.
That old chestnut put to bed a few servers :p.

Congratz mate!

EVERYONE does it

I dont ! :(

...

Yeah Ok, I do. :p

Actually, my most common mistake, is that I may have the setup done and spot on exact, everythign will be perfect with it and I drop it off and I hear a sodding screw lose inside... Where the hell do they come from?

I think there is a screw fairy messing me about from a previous build ( When I found I had a spare? )

well to be fair the 6 pin PCI-e connecter is fairly new technology so i could see this as an easy mistake to make so dont beat urself up about it :)
i havnt made this mistake (yet), but then iv only ever had the one card that needed a 6 pin but knew i needed to plug it :)

(maybe this needs a new thread but oh well) :) anyway... my 'common mistake' is when buying a new hdd i plug it in boot up striaght away into windows, open my computer... o knows its not here, i then goto device manager.. its in there (think hmmm weird whats wrong) i start going through some options/settings trying to find something that might be wrong, i 'google it', i break down and give up on it for a few minutes LOL. then it clicks! ITS NOT PARTITIONED, i reboot Partition the thing, boot windows back up yay it work what a miracle *kicks self. and thats my comon mistake :p

You realise of course you can do all that from computer mangement without rebooting windows :)
