This is my rig so far. I will mainly be doing HD video editing, but maybe a bit of gaming (power hungry ones like COD, Crysis and Far Cry 2)

Can you recommend a decent graphics card to keep around my £700 budget at around the price of £150?

Many thanks!

firstly drop the seagate, google should tell you why

second 4850 if you want to be under 150

4870 if you can go to 170

that cooler is for AMD cpu and is not very good anyway ( I had the intel version ;))

change to a noctua, tuniq or TRUE

I agree with Jak's comments

question why that dvd-R? can get sammy, sony or pioneer for a lot less

if your doing a lot of video, 320GB is surely not enough space,
I'd suggest a (second?) larger drive (doesn't have to be in the inital build but something to bear in mind if the work-in-progress/final endcoded vid is going to be stored locally

also i presume you already have an Operating system? (you cant salvage the OEM one tied to your dell!)
Mouse/keyboard/monitor etc?

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to start dis-assembling the Dell, the family would like it as its still a bit of a demon for their needs i.e. internet browsing and word processing. I mainly want an upgrade to overclock (Dell's don't allow it ) and a slightly better graphics card as my current one is starting to struggle with my dual monitor setup. I can't get a graphics card upgrade as the Dell is in a slimline case.

I will at first try and get the OEM from Dell to work, if no to will have to go out and buy an OS.

Got a few external HDD's to make use of ;)

Greg, that cd drive cant do lightscribe. Depending on weather you want it you could spend an extra £5 for lightscribe you may want to change it back to the other one.
Thats my opinion. Cmon its only £5.

Sorry, I don't think that comment is very useful unless you state why.

Regarding your final spec, it all looks good. If you shop around a bit though, you might be able to fit in a 4870 and still keep it under £700 in total.

Trying to spec an i7 myself and found this illuminating.

QUOTE:
"At this point those looking to build a Core i7 system should consider buying low-latency DDR3-1066 memory, or at most 1333MHz memory.

The only other choice you need to make is whether you want to buy a 3GB of 6GB kit, and honestly, if you are a gamer buying the latter is probably a waste of money, especially with current DDR3 prices that will only drop in time. But if you are thinking fancy for your new Core i7 setup, 6GB definitely sounds way better on paper"

Because that case is horrible and its a crime to put expensive components in such a cheap case that will be frustrating to build in.

Antec 300 is the better option by far.
