Bulgaria to host F1 in 2012. Artificially heated asphalt.

If its a good track, supported well locally then its good. If its a boring track, with poor turnout... it will just join the others like it.

Bulgaria? I know Bernie wants to go to economically emerging countries where there is investment for the sport...but Bulgaria? Does he know something I do not? Doesn't seem too glamerous either.

If the heat can be controlled and the temperature is announced well in advance (before the season starts ideally), I don't see a problem.

Otherwise temperature can be manipulated to favour teams (based on season performances) imo.

Bulgaria has one of the fastest emerging tourist industries and has a lot of british investment in holiday lets etc i thought?

Thumbs down from me over the track heating. I've never been a fan of ultra smooth flawless tarmac on race circuits, which I suppose is what this heating will help to achieve. I like a bit of character.

Yeah, but Bulgaria...

F1 is going a bit down market in order to fill up the last remaining spaces in Bernie's pockets.

I went to Bulgaria (Varna) for my honeymoon - it's an excellent place.

It's capital, Sofia, is easily up there with the likes of Budapest, Prague etc.

F1 agrees race in Dubai/Bahrain = "Boohoo they only want money"
F1 agrees race in India/USA = "Waaaah they're taking races away from their 'true fans' in Europe"
F1 agrees race in Eastern Europe = "Stupid idea/It'll probably be boring/Bulgaria??"

Seems anything less than reinstating every race track that once held a Grand Prix won't do for some people.

Wait, they are bringing in 1.6/1.8 turbos to help improve the green credentials of the sport. Then they want to bring in a track with a heated floor. Wat?

This is what I was thinking, when I made the thread.

What is the heating for?
Is it to clear rain off the track or create better traction overall?
Isn't Bulgaria cold? Perhaps it's their way to insure the track isn't frozen / too cold to race on.

It's not cold in the summer and is regularly above 30c

I quite like Bulgaria, so i'm looking forward to this.

I've always wondered though why someone hasn't a) a heated track before b) used a ridiculously grippy surface like the diamond cut asphalt they use at Indy
