I'm not normally one to take supplements, but I've taken a bit of a hit from an illness and lost a chunk of weight and strength. I'm looking for something with calories and vitamins to get the weight back on.

My fitness regime pretty much revolves around cycling on my commute, which I treat as a 20 minute sprint ride. I also run once or twice a week. At the moment I'm unable to do either, but I'm aiming to have a light run at the end of the week and start riding again next week, albeit nowhere near as intensely as normal. I'd like to back this up with with the supplement to get the weight back on as quickly as possible.

I had a free sample of 'For Goodness Shakes' but I think this is more geared towards a post-run shake. It's not particularly high in protein and a high carb content, so ideal for what it does. I liked the fact that it had added vitamins and minerals as I'm very run down and the boost on top of my diet is a bonus, but the calorie content was quite low.

What does anyone recommend? I know it'll cost a bit more but I'd quite like something I can get on the high street so I can get on with it. Would prefer a flavoured one with sugar rather than sweetener as I've had a sweetener based one and it was a bit too grim for my palate :D

How much are you willing to spend, because Oats, Whey and Alpha Men from MyProtein would do the trick.

I don't know, no idea how much these things cost.

Hmm, should this have gone in the 'Supplements the debate/discussion thread' thread?

If you're no longer ill and don't have a problem getting plenty of food down then as 'Wes says just stick to food, plenty of oats, rice, pasta, meat, eggs and vegetables with a multi vit thrown in if you feel the need. Basically if you already have a good diet just eat moar :D

Had a look in Holland and Barrett while I was out but they just seem to have overpriced guff that looks like not much more than dried milk and sweetener. I think I might mix up some shakes for myself out of whole milk, milk powder, raw egg and Nesquik.

You could do that tbh, throw some oats in there too and you're good.

I think the easiest method here is to buy cheap whey and ground oats, they you can add peanut butter for extra cals, maybe some fresh/frozen berries.

That's what I'd do anyway.

Ah yes, forgot about peanut butter. Just got back from the supermarket too :(

Loaded up with two bags of dried milk. That mixed up with whole milk ought to get some extra calories in :D
