Well it looks like my year old 60GB laser is dying as I'm suddenly getting lots of disc read errors. I phoned Sony support and they said they'll pick it up and repair it free of charge which is great. However, it's great timing considering all the awesome games that are coming out now and the fact that I just got a new plasma tv!

However, I'm just wondering if it's worth asking for a replacement as there may be better reliability with the newer 80GB PS3s? I never use the backwards compatibility of memory stick adaptors and I'd be prepared to pay a charge (within reason). Has anyone ever had their 60GB repaired by Sony? If so how has it been since? Any issues?

Any thoughts people?

Let 'em fix it and then sell it and buy a 80gb/160gb with change left over?

Agree with rp2000 you could sell it for good money because plenty of people still seem to want the 60gb version for their ps2 games .

Yeah I did consider that, but after looking on auction sites it seems that even 60GB are going for around £270 and that's with a number of games. So I doubt I would even match the price of a new 80GB plus it's extra hassle, though I would renew my warranty by buying a new one i suppose.

What to do what to do!

yeah i got a 360. not gonna play gears 2 till i get my 422 plasma fixed.wont look as good on a 26". still i feel for ya with your ps3 on its way out.

You wont be without it at all - they swap them over there and then, usually next day!

i agree with modern manufactoring but you dont spend £1800 on a tv to last 2 and a half years.realy ticked me off but lg have been great and repairing it free of chrge event ho its out of warranty

Yeah that's true - but when you consider that that price is relative to the item it would be a lot more expensive otherwise. The fact that it's under £2000 means that many corners have been cut to get the price down! However, as you say at least their customer service is up to it!

The lady on the phone said they repair it and send it back. Can I ask for a straight swap even though it's out of warranty?

Ah, maybe since it's a 60gig they have to repair your console as opposed to sending you a refurb in advance as they're no longer produced?

what happens to your save games etc ?

I copied my save games onto a USB stick, everything else i re-downloaded in about a day. If you have a large enough USB harddrive you can back everything up using the 'backup utility'

A replacement BD laser kit is £31 online, not sure for the delivery chargers and its next day. Not sure if you are paying for a repair but it maybe useful for anyone else.

Had my 60GB replaced just over a month ago, it was a straight swap on my doorstep next day :)

Replacement one is as new but I assume it's a refurb as their no longer made. My original console was well out of warranty yet Sony swapped it over no questions asked.

Sony's service in my experience is first class, and is the reason I am going for a Sony Bravia in the next couple of days.
