I've burnt a data cd using vista and I can't see it using win98. Is this because it uses a different file format? Is it possible to burn a CD using vista that can be seen using windows 98?

It was my friends vista (basic) system. All I did was drag the files onto the cd drive as I don't think he had any third party writing software. It then formatted the disc (this threw me a bit) and wrote the files to the disc.

windows default format is UDF, I believe - which Win 98 cannot read by default. You'll need to install the Roxio UDF reader (I think!!)

Is their any way around this? I noticed before the cd was formatted their was a formatting options button. Could I change to another file system or something? Is roxio UDF reader free and what do I install this on? Win98?

You have used vista's built in packet writing software, win98 cannot read this, you will need the reader installed on the win98 machine, and yes, it is free.

What I'm trying to get onto my win98 machine is network card drivers. So how will I get the reader onto my win98 machine if I'm using vista and its writing cd's in UDF?

With a Win98 driver for the USB stick you should be fine.

So attach the mp3 player to vista and drag the files onto the player, won't vista write the files onto the stick in vista-speak?

I've got drivers for the mp3 player on my win98 machine so no problems there.

Well I took my MP3 player round to my friends and it was asking for the drivers. I thought it would be like XP and pick up the player as a drive automatically. Vista seems a step back IMO. Gonna have to go round to another friends and use his XP machine
