I've burnt a data cd using vista and I can't see it using win98. Is this because it uses a different file format? Is it possible to burn a CD using vista that can be seen using windows 98?

what did you use to burn the disc (which app?), it may be packet writing software you used and win98 does not support these without the correct reader installed.

It was my friends vista (basic) system. All I did was drag the files onto the cd drive as I don't think he had any third party writing software. It then formatted the disc (this threw me a bit) and wrote the files to the disc.

windows default format is UDF, I believe - which Win 98 cannot read by default. You'll need to install the Roxio UDF reader (I think!!)

Is their any way around this? I noticed before the cd was formatted their was a formatting options button. Could I change to another file system or something? Is roxio UDF reader free and what do I install this on? Win98?

You have used vista's built in packet writing software, win98 cannot read this, you will need the reader installed on the win98 machine, and yes, it is free.

What I'm trying to get onto my win98 machine is network card drivers. So how will I get the reader onto my win98 machine if I'm using vista and its writing cd's in UDF?

I've got a usb MP3 player that also acts as a USB stick. Will this work? The MP3 player was setup using Win XP so will win98 be able to read it?

With a Win98 driver for the USB stick you should be fine.

So attach the mp3 player to vista and drag the files onto the player, won't vista write the files onto the stick in vista-speak?

I've got drivers for the mp3 player on my win98 machine so no problems there.

The files will be stored on the MP3 player according to the existing media format. FAT most likely. You'll be fine so long as Windows 98 has a driver for the mass storage device.

When you put a disc in for writing, it asks you which format. It does say that the default will be unable to be read pre-WinXP.

Well I took my MP3 player round to my friends and it was asking for the drivers. I thought it would be like XP and pick up the player as a drive automatically. Vista seems a step back IMO. Gonna have to go round to another friends and use his XP machine
