Situation in work today where one of my colleagues has discovered a problem in the last few days with his 17" LCD screen.

He discovered a few lines wouldn't go away from his screen no matter how many adjustments he made to the screen resolution, refresh or panel settings. I was asked to help him out with it so I tried thing's like using the screensaver and changing desktop background colour to black and only a few lines appear. I then realised it was the Microsoft Word file menu and top/bottom toolbars.

The air temperature in the room is about 31°C and the operating temperature of the screen is 35°C so is it possible the image has burnt onto the screen due to excessive heat? I've not experienced the problem anywhere with decent air conditioning here, leading me to think heat is the issue.

Thats what screensavers are generally for. At a guess he has left his machine over the weekend with a doc open in word. Not covered under any warranty i am afraid. I have never heard it being burned in due to high temps...

i would think it is more down to general image persistance which can occur on TFT / LCD screens. It is likely that it will fade over time, but you might find that if the screen is quite old, it will become more and more of an issue. Some screens show this after a while, and the image remains ghosted on the screen when left for long periods of time. You may have some luck leaving the screen off for a while and see if it clears. you may also have some luck RMA-ing it under warranty perhaps

It's about six months to a year old. I knew about these problems with older LCD screens although I didn't know if it still happened, that's why I thought it was the heat.

I'll see if the monitor can be replaced under warranty. :)

I have the same problem with my old AOC LM919 monitor. It goes away if you switch off the screen over night. Unfortunately, it comes back within an hour of use. So for example, the windows task bar with the "start" symbol is always burnt into the bottom of the screen. Guess that when this happens it means it's time to upgrade.
