hi, just built my rig for the first time, tried to power up and it made a high pitched noise that sounded like it came from the processor. have i busted it during the build or is it something else? i think everything is installed correctly. also my mobo Abit IP35-E (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard seems to only have one IDE plug, so do i have to plug both the hard drive and the dvd drive into that? and does the hard drive need to be the master?
any help appreciated guys.

As far as I know processors have no moving parts so this probably won't be coming from the CPU. Chances are it's your PSU.

so if the high pitched noise is all i get when i power up the system what should i do? ive realised that the mobo i have only has one IDE socket and both my disk drive and hard drive are IDE so i need to replace one of them, but should the system still power up?

Does the system post or display anything on the screen? Some graphics cards squeal if they are not receiving enough power, my 2900XT did that.

ive got a 450w psu so i dont think its that. nothing on screen at all. noise definitely seemed to come from the cpu. could it be a driver conflict due to not formatting hard drive? i installed the rig all at once should i take out the ram and try doing it little by little?

Make sure the graphics cards power connector is plugged in. Lots of new cards make a high pitch noise if it isn't. You might want to get a SATA hard drive, Intel doesn't even support IDE drives anymore, most IDE controllers are a 3rd party brand such as Jmicron. Set your hard drive to Master using the jumper on the hard drive, and set the CD to slave.
