Quick background...

Came to tax my car on the 30th december only to realise it should have been taxed on the 30th November... for some reason I was acting like a retard and thought that the 12th meant that it was taxed until the end of the 12th month. Pretty retarded considering i've taxed a car every 6 monthes for 4 years now...

Anyway, I taxed it at the lady at the post office told me that nothing would come of it as it was done in the month the tax was due and they generally let it slide. I was dubious but forgot about it....

Recieved a letter today stating that...

We have recieved an offence report alleging that at 13:45hrs on the 16/12/2007 the above vehicle was seen in xxxxx road being used/kept on a public road whilst inlicensed...

I was kind of worried at this point that the fine would be substantial (a student on placement isn't exactly rolling in it ;)) but it turns out that they only want £45.00... which is the lowest amount. Probably because they realise that it was a genuine mistake!!

Now I know i've done wrong in the eyes of the law. It is an offence, and it does somewhat need enforcing to make sure people don't openly flout the law. But what I can't understand is it seems that there 'all seeing' online checking system has let me through but i've been stung by some freak (who the hell walks around reading tax disks ) who probably hasn't got a job in the day so thought it would be fulfilling to make other people pay tax that pays there dole money

Just annoying, the money isn't a big deal but it's crap that people who generally pay bills/tax on time get stung for one mistake due to criminals who flout the law all the time and moreso get away with it.

Love to find the ******* who sent a letter in.. he'd have 4500 pennies stuffed in his mouth while I jumped up and down on his cheeks.:o

How is a random person to know you're the sort to normally obey the law. All they've seen is that you have an out-of-date tax disc.

I don't see how being stung for one mistake has anything to do with criminals who flout the law all the time either. And your last comment just makes you sound like a thug.

Or a traffic warden, but lets be honest, who really cares?

True, and not me for one. I'm all for fines as deterrents, if you screw up you screw up. Take it like a man, "genuine mistake" or not in the eyes on the law you still fouled up.

On the flip side, what if you were a bona fide tax dodger who intentionally wanted to get a month off paying tax - should you be allowed the grace of a "genuine mistake"?

And? Why is it your responsibility to uphold the ridiculous level of tax the government imposes on us? Keep your nose out of it i say.

Given that if a car is untaxed it's also quite likely to have no MOT, be uninsured and possibly driven by someone who hasn't got a current license tell me again why it shouldn't be reported?

It's what the PCSOs around my way do when the youffss aren't marauding. I've seen them going from car to car checking tax disks for date and against number plates. I say good on them for the exact reasons highlighted by Werewolf.

Most untaxed cars are also unregistered, driven by ****** and have neither MOT nor insurance, so thats why people report them.

We all HATE paying road tax but if we can be arsed to pay our pathetic road tax on time why should you be any different.

Ahh seems i'm completly and utterly in the wrong then ;)

I would probably accept this if it was a automated fine.

This sounds like it's been passed off by a human as it's signed, etc... what's wrong with someone in the DVLA using there discretion with these things and looking at when the report came in... seeing that the car was re-taxed a few days later and thinking - ah, this must have been a genuine mistake and writing the fine off?

It just seems to serve no benefit in these cases :S The car was re-taxed in the same month... they have lost no money (except costing themselves what ever in admin sending the fine).

And can't be arsed? Who said I couldn't be arsed its a mistake  Are you some kind of spaz who reads into something that isn't there?

And whoever said it was a PCSO is probably right. We've got a right moody (fairly young) sod around here who regulary patrols the area. Run past him on the canal a few times so might have to push him in for fun soon*.

*Just in case it was him, it may not have been.. I have no proof.
