I haven’t had a new pc in about 7 years.

I no longer use it for much, other than running my eBay side-hustle.

The issue I’m having is I buy my stock in bulk and photograph it all before putting it in storage. Which means I have folders with 3,000-5,000 images in them, which I then list as and when I got time.

The images are hi-res and quite big. I have an SSD and dedicated graphics, but it’s getting to the point where the folder is taking ages to load and render thumbnails.

I’m breaking it up into smaller folders but it’s getting annoying and I’m after something that’ll handle these tasks with ease. And I’m due an upgrade.

Any recommendations on kit that’ll do this with ease? Only need a base unit, so cheap as possible. Or should I just get a Mac Mini

TIA

What kind of SSD is it? Is it definitely bottlenecking on the SSD, or is it something else?
The SSD is also 7 years old. And isn’t anything special. It’s not m.2 or anything.

How can I tell where the bottleneck is?

You probably just need to add another SSD to increase storage then move some of your stuff over to the new drive ?

What size is your drive? have you done a disk clean up in device maintenance ?

It’s 256gb with over 50% free.
I have 2x2tb storage drives for keeping stuff on.
I’ve done disk maintenance and optimised the drive.

Sorry for so many questions ,

Has it always been like this or recent accurance ?

What transfer speeds are you getting ?

What interface are you using from your camera usb ?
No worries! Appreciate the help!

I’ve only noticed recently as my purchases have grown. If I break it down into folders of a few hundred images there’s no lag.

I’ve not checked the transfer speeds. How would I do that?

My camera is Wi-Fi connected but I’m not trying to load the folder / use the images until the transfer is complete. So I’m loading them from the HDD/SDD rather than the camera.

Are you using windows 10 ?

There quite a few articles about slow thumbnails opening something to do with cache files building up .

To make this specific task as fast as possible you will be looking at a CPU with high IPC (Intel i5 13600K and above, AMD Ryzen 5 7600 and above) paired with fast RAM and a Pcie 4.0 M.2 Nvme drive.
But it is definitely not cost effective.

I suggest you go through software settings linked above
If it is still annoyingly slow, your current PC should be able to take a M.2 drive, that will get you 80% there. 500GB drives start at 60ish and should make a difference
Then see if you can maybe overclock CPU slightly, tune memory timings.

That's not bad system and very upgradable if you decide to make improvements but I still think it may be a windows issue.

SSD not on the list.

Are graphics drivers up to date and motherboard drivers ?

Hi drivers are up to date! The SSD is the second drive listed at 232gb? Or have I misread it?

I wonder if it’s time for a format and reload
