Butterfly and Dragonfly

holy hell! have you thought about selling some of these pictures to biodiversity and ecology books? i had to do those subjects at uni for my degree and none of the pictures were this good!

how close do you physically have to be for these pics? i dont full understand how macro lenses work :s

Thank you!

You have to get pretty close for the more extreme macros, about 2-4cm away I believe (it's hard to tell from behind the camera). This is probably what makes using this lens so hard, it's not the photography side of it, it's the sneaking up to the subject before they fly off + not accidentally squashing them with the lens when you're rocking about trying to focus!

hmmm, I'm going to the US in November.

yak.h'cir - I've used a MPE-65 but it was indoors and on a tripod etc. Is it worth getting the MPE-65 over the 100mm and extension tubes? (2:1)
How easy can you hand hold over 2:1 ??

I very rarely use mine with a tripod, the pictures above were all hand held so in answer to your question it's not too difficult, and it's definitely worth getting over the 100mm with tubes (I used this method for about a year). I find the images much sharper and the option for getting upto 5:1 magnification at the twist of the wrist is very useful.

Really stunning work yak.h'cir. How did you get the insects to sit still while you switched lenses, or do you use two bodies?

If you look at the colours, they are different insects, but very cool images still.

Thank you very much! Jealousy is a bad thing though, especially when the lens is just a few little clicks away! :p

Unfortunately not if you have less than a quarter of the cost in the bank. :(

Thank you.

As InvaderGIR noticed they're two different insects. I live next to a pretty big river with lots of long grass type fields which seems to be perfect for dragonflys as there are hundreds of the things.

Hi mate, I'm not that great at C&C but here goes.

1. Nice pic, nice DoF but I think the crops a little off where the flower isn't complete. It Bug's me, hehe geddit? :p

2. Very eerie, very cool, love it :)

3. Nice and sharp, love it.

4. Unbelievable! was this bug under some form of anasthetic for you to take it? lol

Congrats on the series :)

Cheers. :)

I know what you mean regards the first one, I was tempted to crop the flower out but that was more because it was out of focus. All the images are uncropped by the way. :D

amazing photography there!

im so want that lens!!! just saw the price though, dam... maybe not just yet
about double what i paid for my 100mm macro lens.

very very inspiring pictures! thanks for showing us!

Yeah, I saw the lens for around £500 as opposed to the £300 the 100MM costs. Just buying the lens wont give results like these though. Hours of practice, patience and swearing at the wind as it blows your bug out of focus are yet to follow :D
