Buy a macbook

If you need it now, buy it.

Things are forever progressing. The last Apple meet is done and dusted, so we can "safely" assume it's a good time now, seeing as it has recently been updated to Core 2 Duo.

Leopard is not out till "Spring 2007", very vague but I'm sure apple will bring it out before the summer hits. Plus, with Core 2 Duo, it'll go well with Leopard when it comes out.

Get it now if you see the need for.

If he absolutely needs it now then fair enough I suppose, but otherwise waiting three months (is it?) to save £80 seems sensible :)

Presumably, immediately prior to the release of Leopard, Apple will do some sort of free upgrade offer for those buying a Mac with Tiger?

I think it's within 2 weeks, but that's for hardware only, no?

The 2 weeks offer is basically because products* bought from an Apple Store (or Online) have a no questions asked return policy of 14 days. So technically if something is released a week after you bought a MacBook then you could return it and then buy the new thing - however Apple offer an exchange with the difference either to be paid or credited.

* Not all products apply.

I bought a macbook 5 months ago.

I'm first in line for leopard, the upgrade few is nothing compared to what you could be paying for vista...

If you need a macbook get one. I got mine a week ago since the recent update to duo 2 is a milestone. Just add 2GB of ram to have the extra kick and leopard for the 60-80 quid isnt something to worry about :D

ps: Does apple offer the 15% discount fot students on software only. Upgrade or standalone?

How much will the upgrade fee be then? I didn't realise there was any such thing as an upgrade version of OSX.

Technically all OS X discs are upgrades, since you can't buy a Mac without the OS, so comparing OS X pricing to Vista retail is misleading. The student discount is huge though, £58 presently.

When Tiger launched it was available for about £11 to people who had bought hardware a month or so previously, I can't remember the exact details.

The Macbook Pro's were only updated late October afaik with the C2D, I think the displays on them might get updated soon though, LED's or something

OSX is a great OS, just takes about a week to get used to that's all :)
