Buy GeForce GTX 1080 Ti or GeForce RTX 2080

Hi!

I would like to ask for advice on purchasing a new video card.
My config:

Asus Maximus VIII motherboard
Intel 6700K
8GB DDR4 RAM (update soon)
Monitor: 2560 * 1440p

I've also watched a lot of tests, where I found that higher graphics settings made the RTX 2080 better.
When you decrease the graphics to low-medium, the 1080Ti was better.
Is the 8GB of memory enough for games?

What do you recommend?
Which is the right choice?

Thank you very much

It is a tough one really. What makes it tough is the 1080Ti having 3GB extra ram which may come in handy. If not for that I would say definitely worth paying the extra £130 for the 2080.

At that resolution I would probably go for the 2080 in your place personally. At least you have the latest shiniest toy and have the upside that performance will likely only get better going forward.

That res doesn’t justify a gfx card costing 800 quid.

Get a used 1080 and miss the 2080 gen completely.

Fact is....the games are not out that use the tech...and by the time they do...the 2080 will be dead tech.

I suppose if you play 1440p with resolution scaling it might be worth it.

But really they are 4K cards, with some games requiring some dropping of settings to hit 4K60.

Cards like the 1080, comfortably do 1440p60 (45% of the pixels at 2160p).

If it's 60Hz don't bother with anything past a 1080, I've been having fun with a 1070 and a 165Hz monitor, there's no need whatsoever for anything more powerful at 60Hz.

forget RTX. RTX games aren't out and when they will be, the 2080 will be a piece of junk. 30fps at 4k is a joke.
And the 1080 Ti will be an even bigger piece of junk :p.
We haven't seen any RTX games released yet to judge that for certainty either to be fair.

If I could pick up a 2nd hand 1080ti for under £500 with warranty that would be my way to go. Buying both new I would just stump up the extra to get a 2080fe, it’s newer architecture so should pull away from the 1080ti as time goes on.

I have a GTX1080FE and it is mostly fine at qHD. Remember the extra £350 on a GTX2080 can be saved towards a GTX3080,etc at a later date. If I was spending more than I would get a GTX1080TI for £600 to £620 due to the extra VRAM,and you still have nearly £200 towards a newer GPU in the future and some retailers still are giving away games with these cards.

You could also see how the GTX2070 performs though but I am uncertain how much quicker it will be over a GTX1080.

Edit!!

I just saw there are some deals on the GTX1070TI

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/nvidia-1070ti-deals.18831934/

I would probably look at one of those TBH.

Close call and imo no cut and dry right answer. I would go for the 2080 due to DLSS and maybe even rtx... But I respect the view of anyone saying 1080ti.... Esp about the 8gb ram

Another consideration .. could VR be of interest in the future? If so the 20xx gains a point there

I'm not playing that many games but with a 1070 Ti I've not yet played any games that use more than about 4GB ram. I think 8 is enough @ 1440P. At 4k personally I'd especially want the 2080 Ti anyway for the extra oomph :)
1070 Ti is a good card but playing Mafia 3 briefly yesterday reminded me of one of the problem we have - suboptimal games. People moan because the hardware is expensive but if some games were developed a bit better we wouldn't require the top end hardware.

At 1440p 60hz a 1080 would suffice but I'd still go for a 1080 Ti just for the extra longevity. I've opted for the latter as I'm at 144hz and my 980 Ti doesn't get the frame rates I want in some games, couoled with the fact I play controller games on my 4K TV (itching to step into the Witcher 3 DLC on that thingh).

I'm buying second hand as £620 is a bit rich considering how long the cards have been out and the fact they're now superceded. Plus if you can bag a 2080 for £750 it's too close to that price *IF* DLSS sees widespread adoption (including in older games).

True dat! I wish pc games were half as optimised as console games.

Look at something like TLOU or horizon ZD on PS4. With that level of optimisation on pc we would all essentially get huge overnight upgrades for free

I have not yet thought about switching to higher resolution than 1440p. I can not see the meaning of 4K. I do not use VR.
Based on the tests, the 2080 looks better, but the less VRAM is a bit worried.
In my country there is a discount in which context the RTX2080(https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-34b-ms.html). This VGA is currently 760GBP.
The MSI 1080Ti(https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...dr5x-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-34f-ms.html) was ~620GBP on Friday, but the the discount was over.
The difference of the card is 140GBP.
I do not know whether the premium is worth it.
It's also an opportunity to buy a 1080Ti now, and in two years I'll switch to another new series. The same is true of 2080.
I want you to have at least 60 FPS for each game with at least 2 years on maximum settings (1440p, G-Sync, 144Hz).
It should be based on these.
