Japan has launched a bold new initiative to get people drink more, apparently to increase their tax take. They are running a brainstorming competition, and the winning entry will be put into practice.

But aside from boring tax reasons, could this be Japan trying to rebrand itself? No more grey suited salarymen, sober and efficient high speed train networks, or boring appreciation of cherry blossom and anime, say hello to Asia's new party capital? Want to give Sanna Marin a run for her money next time she's over on a diplomatic mission?

Anyway this got me thinking, what would you do to boost alcohol consumption in the UK?

My top idea would be to make it illegal to ride a bus or train without an open container of alcohol in your hand. And no loopholes for kids, the sooner they learn to handle their drink the better.

We're off to a great start, some fantastic ideas, love it.

It’s the demise of the grey suited salarymen which is driving down the consumption of alcohol. Japan is famous for after work drinks at the expense of family time.
That's quite an interesting insight... I guess this puts the Japanese campaign in a difficult position really... They need to decide whether to go down a 'Retvrn to Tradition - get hammered after work' route or a more progressive and innovative route.

This is possibly the worst link I've seen in a while, just loads a google favicon!
Yeah sorry about that, just how the url comes up when I click through from the Google homepage :p. Fixed now.

When supermarkets get new drinks in, the staff (who drink) need to sample it then can inform customers about them. Increased sales, staff get free samples. Boom! Then when someone drops a bottle of gin, no need for mop and bucket. Pour some tonic water, provide straws (to prevent glass going into mouth) and let staff sup it up.

Give away a free bottle of Frosty Jack with every bag of Kettle Chips/ tube of Pringles?

Reduce the legal drinking age to 14? I had some great drunken nights out at that age, and don't see why other kids should suffer.

Awaiting a comment from {insert forum member of your choice} suggesting it is because adherants of that religion don't drink.
