I've got a 40GB PS3 which is out of warranty and has no reciept from purchase. The blu ray drive is dead (very disappointing as rarely used) so while everything else works i can't play any games that aren't downloaded.

Is it worth repairing it? I found a place online that sells refurbed drives with a 3 month warranty for £65 but as i can get a new 160GB Slim for £200 with a 1 year warranty plus reciept I'm not sure whether to get it and sell the old one on the bay or even repair and sell then get new one if that works out better?

Don't get me wrong, the aestethics mean nothing to me. i'm looking at it for the fact that it is new so likely have longer with it before it fails plus the warranty and receipt. i suppose the bigger hard drive is a bonus but i dont have a load of games to really max it out.

Get a slim TBH, seen them for around £180 for the 160GB version, they use a lot less power than the 40Gbs and its probably quieter than your old one.

Worth noting too, that the 1 year warrenty is complete rubbish.

I've got loads of faulty electronics replaced after 3 or 4 years that had a '1 year warrenty'.

1 year warrenty is a term inveted by companies to trick people into buying extended warrenties, even though by law you already have an extended warrenty.

Hell, I even took a kettle back to Asda once after 4 years!!! Supposadly only had a 1 year warrenty but I was popping in for shopping anyway so figured I might as well.

Some companies will fight it more than others. But google your consumer rights, and maybe write an e-mail instead of phoning as you can sound like you know exactly what you're talking about via e-mail!

To be fair, I had a similar problem with PS3 and Sony were 1 of the companies were were being awkward about it and i just decided to get a Slim. Turns out, they did give in and I got sent a refurbed 60GB the next day and they picked my old one up. So now I have 2. lol.

The Slim is much better. Less noise, less power, less heat.

Yeah I've read up on the Sale of Goods Act where you can get something sorted if there's a reasonable expectation of it not going wrong within 6 years. That's why i mention getting proof of purchase so i could actually use that law although the 1 year warranty still makes it less hassle then doing that way

If and when mine breaks, I'm going to buy a new one. The only exception to that would be if it breaks shortly before the next gen are likely to appear in which case I might just trade the games in for either xbox 360 games or towards a pre-order on a new console.

Unfortunately I've found buying online makes this a bit more awkward. But buying online is just the easiest way to go these days.

But I know what you mean, it's often just easier to replace things yourself.
