Hey,

I'm sure you've all heard about the rumours of a MB and MBP upgrade at the conference in June. No one knows if these rumours are true and when the upgrades would occur but it's probably around July.

Rumours include:

  • Better processor speeds to match the recent iMac speed increases and intel processor updates
  • Bigger touch pad
  • Possible slight price drop
  • Possible redesign, more likely on the MBs though. I don't see how they could really change much of the MBP current design.
Do you think I'm best waiting until the conference in June before buying? If they don't announce anything then I could buy straight away, otherwise I would wait. I understand you can never keep up to technology but I'm willing to wait until the end of August at the latest. Most of me wants to run out any buy one tomorrow though :p

I was thinking of getting the 7200rpm HDD but it means I need to order online and there's a two week wait for it to be made and dispatched. Is it really worth the wait?

Thanks

In these cases I always say just buy it.

You'll be happy with what ever you buy, and whenever you buy something, someone 3 seconds later will have developed something better.

It's the way it works! :)

Have you ordered it yet? ;) :p

I am in the same boat however I have decided to wait until June as I would rather have a blu-ray drive in the MBP if possible and hoping they will get one in the upgrade. Spec wise all I would add is the hi-res screen and the 7200 drive, then drop in my own 4gig. It would be nice if they bumped the standard processor up to the 2.6ghz model however.

If you want the 7200 drive the apple store in Glasgow had these in stock with or without the high res screen as they said it is a very popular upgrade. The guy in the store was hinting that a blu-ray drive will be available soon.

How were they hinting dave? The Trafford centre staff don't think there will be an update soon. Personally don't see the point in a bluray drive in them. Would be nice if I can get the 7200 rpm HDD though. I'll ring around tomorrow

I'm with Phate on this one, if you want it, get it, don't worry about what might be coming in the next update.

That's what I did ;)

I told the guy in the shop that I was holding off as I wanted a blu-ray drive his response was you won't have a long wait weather he ment the Mac Pro I was looking at also or the MBP I don't know as he wouldn't say anymore but it makes sense now blu-ray is the winner and Apple backed blu-ray so they just need to sort the software, the drive itself should be a straight swap all the higher end Sony Vaios come with one standard now.

Main reason I want a blu-ray drive is I buy new movies in HD so that is now blu-ray only although still picking up cheap HD-DVDs. I like to hook up my current laptop to projector/big plasma when on my break at work to watch movies etc so a blu-ray drive would be handy however if they don't annouce one in June I will buy one without it as its not a real deal breaker.

You should have no problem finding one in stock with a 7200 drive.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll pick one up today or Wednesday evening once my exams finish.
As for Bluray, its not a quick swop because the need to include a DVD burner with the bluray reader.

Good luck with your purchase.

All the blu-ray laptop drives include a dvd burner and the more expensive ones are also a blu-ray & dvd writer. The hardware is availabe now and if Sony can include one in a £700 laptop as standard I can't see why Apple can't put one in the flagship model as standard and include the blu-ray writer as a option. I am ony hoping though but I don't mind the wait until June as my current laptop is working OK.

I was thinking about upgrading my macbook to the 15" pro - but instead I'm treating it to a bigger hard disk and more ram...

I don't really need a new machine - i just want one!!

You wont go wrong! Its easy to say 'oh i'll just wait for a little while' and its a perpetual cycle!

New tech will always be coming out - glad you've decided to bit the bullet!!

Tom

I bought one! Sitting here in front of my lovely MacBook Pro. Takes some getting used to after using a Windows operating system all my life (trying out Ubuntu didn't really seem like a jump).

Installed some of my favourite programs as well as programs I've always wanted to try. The one problem I have having is the must-look-after-new-toy problem. I only touch the keys atm so sometimes I miss a letter or two out. Won't be long until I get used to it though.

I went through the same process before Leopard launched. Memory was stupidly cheap so I stuck a 2Gb kit in and a 250Gb HDD.

I'm still tempted by an upgraditis as mine's now over 2 years old, but it does everything I want and looks exactly the same as the current model, so why bother?
