Buy RAM in Asus QVL or cheaper option (not in QVL)?

Hi all,

What are people's opinion on using RAM that isn't listed on a motherboard's QVL (qualified vendor list)?

I have a few options for my RAM purchase for my new Ryzen build but I am concerned if I choose the wrong RAM that I will have issues getting it to run at the advertised timings and speed etc.

Plan on purchasing Asus ROG Crosshair Hero VII (x470), AMD 3700X with 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3600MHz kit.

Their QVL is listing RAM which is ridiculously expensive right now compared to other options which aren't on the list.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this :)

So it doesn't matter if I choose a specific ram kit from the Asus QVL?

Yup, the Micron (Crucial Ballistix Elite BLE2K8G4D36BEEAK) kit is the one I was looking at. Or a G Skill RGB kit. Though I want to try to avoid RGB on RAM.

It is if you increase the DRAM voltage. I am a few seconds off the best settings in Ryzen DRAM tester.

That's you, not all CPU's and motherboard will give the same results.

i rule of thumb is all DDR4 will overclock and most if not all can run 1.5v day to day, but ever stick of ram is different and they all have ic's that are different.
we all have CPU's that will perform different, the Motherboard will be different, the PSU may not supply the power as stably

Samsung b-die is support by all the motherboards I checked. Many different manufactures of RAM use it. That's way you buy dual channel ram as pairs.

If PSU is a factor you need to replace the PSU.
If your CPU is the limiting factor then no ram from anyone else will run faster than its limitation.
Motherboard are different, but almost all run well with samsung b-die, which is what 8-pack states in his video. It's one of the most compatible memory available and runs at high speeds with good timings.

It's your money m8, it's your choice. For me 8-packs ram runs at the rated speed on my motherboard and the timings are very good. Also with tweaking I was able to get high performance but you are right that you are unlikely to get 100% the same. Even so the stock settings are better than most ram and that is important in my opinion for ryzen 3000 performance.

I highly recommended the patriot viper steel series. I got the 4400 cl19. Non rgb (I hate rgb), b die and stable at 3600 14 @1.4v Will be trying for cl12 when I get back from work on Friday. I’m no expert but I presume if it’s rated @ 4400 and tight 19 19 19 timings out of the box, it must be good ram. So far so good at a cheap ish £130. I could not find decent b die g skill for a good price.
