As part of ensuring the Puma is well looked after, im looking at changing the oil at a more sensible interval than ford recommend, I was thinking about every 4-5k or something...

Now, when ive been looking for oil, it seems 5w30 is what the puma needs, but I read this on the pumabuild site...

"Engine oil 5w/30 formula E for the Puma engine using other oils may damage the engine cylinder bores (ni-cascil)"

does this mean I cant use things like Castrol Magnatec/Mobil 1 etc?

You want a Ford spec 5w-30 semi synth. Magnatec is available in that spec, I don't think Mobil 1 is, Ford's own Formula E is only about £15 for 5L or Millers do their XSS Semi Synthetic which is about the same price. Motul do a Ford spec fully synth but its rather expensive at £35+ for 4.5L.

If you're going to do 6k changes Ford's own will be fine but is A1/B1 rated which is fuel economy, the Millers is A3/B3 which is high performance/extended drain so it's theoretically a better oil. I shift a fair bit of oil and the technical people I've spoken to don't think much of Magnatec over a normal oil.

There are a few manufacturers using 5w-30 now so its important to select a Ford spec (WSS and a load of numbers) oil as they need an oil with the correct shear factor.

ok...

without wanting to sounds like a total noob.....

Im wanting to do a few performance enhancing mods on the car, so there are a few things ill be changing for slightly better items (k&n replacement panel filter, better plugs, and oil was another thing I was going to 'upgrade' but basically, if im doing these more frequent changes, i dont need to worry too much?

I would say you would be better off with a "standard" oil changed at 6.5k intervals rather than a fully synth changed at 12.5k

If you are substantially increasing performance and/or will be running the engine very hot eg. on trackdays then I would look at a synthetic like the Motul.

Now I've had the ST remapped I will be switching to 6.5k oil and filter changes, as its a diesel heat is not so much of an issue but it will create more soot particles which will load the oil faster. I'm sticking to a standard oil.

Hi there

contact the chaps at www.opieoils.co.uk as they are experts and know whats best suited to each type of engine. Email them or give them a call and they will recommend you a couple of options. Plus they are also quite a bit cheaper than buying from the shops as well. :)

cost imo isnt a massive issue... within reason of course... as for upgrading the oil blueboy, id be keeping the shorter intervals also...

maybe its overkill, but I intend to look after this engine as best as I can if my 'plan' is to happen...

I know the Puma isn't exactly a Mondeo, but all the folks over on fordmondeo.org.uk say that the 5w30 stuff from ford themselves is pretty good and a damn good price too.

fair enough...

its just.. to get the most from this car, the rev's rarely drop below 4.5k when im going for it.. I dont want something as cheap as oil to be the reason the engine grenades all over the road

I understand your concern, but there must be a reason that all the oil manufacturers make a big thing of stamping the fact they comply to the Ford standards (Ford WSS-M2C-913-A and Ford WSS-M2C-913-B) all over their packaging....

If the standard ACEA A1/B1 spec was superior anyway, surely they'd not bother to mention the ford bit?

*shrugs* I don't know.

I wonder who actually makes the ford oil. I think it was decided by concensus either on here or another board I visit that Comma make the Halfords own brand stuff.

hate working out what oil to use. but even cocking up wont kill your engine although its not a good move! I use standard oil that meets the W rating (15w-40 i think on the 306 or was it 20w 50, or is that the gearbox, no thats 50W - 80 i think....see!!)

Oil is pretty much oil, as said you can overkill quite easy, only go all out if your track-ing it.

Oh yeah and if you have a Sub or some brands of window stickers ie kenwood etc then remember that your car is infact a performance monster and you will need the most expensive oil available to mankind :D

It will be seeing track action, but most of it would probably considered 'fast road'
