Buying a Cat C write-off

Because its worth little?

Then it would be classed as uneconomical repair, Cat D.

how much is it anyway?

whats so special about colts? ain't they just a poor mans civic (in the same way a mondeo is a poor mans e46;))

Nothing really, I like them though. Poor mans Civic? Nah, i think they were about the same price tbh. Unfortunately CCC decided to only import the 3 door hatches with 1.3 and 1.6 SOHC engines. There are loads of other types on the japanese market, 2 door coupe, 4 door saloon, DOHC MIVEC equipped Cyborg models. None of these were sold here though, if they were then maybe people would have paid attention. Situation doesn't bother me though, they look well, drive well, and are a rare sight on the roads and this makes me happy.

Any ideas why the above car would be classified as 'extensively damaged'?

The difference between Cat D and Cat C is purely regarding the total cost of the claim vs the value of the car. It does not indicate the extent of the damage, despite what the internets might say.

A Category C is awarded when the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the car. e.g. A scabby old Ford Escort worth £200 with a dent in a panel could easily be a Cat C. A more expensive car could be a Cat C even with relatively minor damage if the parts are not readily available, since the insurer will have to pay for a hire car whilst the parts get sourced.

A Category D is awarded when the repair costs exceed the value of the car less the salvage value. e.g. if a £500 car would cost £350 to repair, but the salvage is worth £200, then it would cost the insurance company £300 to write the car off, but £350 to repair it.
