Buying a drum kit for my young son, advice please.

AND...a full size kit fro a 7 year old...not so sure. but like 7 year olds clothes, a smaller kit will get grown out of quickly and 11th birthday will be requests for a full size kit :)

Would a full size kit be the best option for a 10 year old (not knowing anything about kit sizes).

My lad has shown an initial interest after playing a bit on an old kit that his mum had, and we've signed him up for lessons at school from September. Unfortunately that kit was getting on a bit and falling apart, so we gave it to the school to use for spares (I'm now wondering whether we should have just refurbed it, but it was in pretty bad nick). We said that if he enjoys the drum lessons and sticks with them, then we'd buy him a new kit for Christmas. I'm guessing we might as well look at a full size kit?

If that's the case your certainly an exception rather than a rule - the only thing I will say is that most hearing tests only go up to 8khz, which isn't particularly high. :)

i can definately here higher frequencys, he showed my hearing range, all seemed pretty normal, so im happy...

i'd say so, if hes 10 he'd be about the right size, and u can adjust the kit to suit.

Just as a quick note - kids are fine on full sized kits! I started playing on a Premier Signia kit when I was 6 years old. (yes, spoilt kid - irony was I didn't even realise how great a kit it was at the time :D)

I agree with both Lowe & Neoni.
After playing for 38 years in many bands and countless musicians the one thing I notice is peoples different abilities to take volume.
My current lead guitarist & drummer both wear ear protection because they suffer but the other 3 of us could easily go up quite a few more db.
However, starting about 3 months ago I have started to suffer a bit and it has worried me.
To get above the noise of the band I have in ear monitoring which has to be very loud.
Like Neoni I've been very lucky for 38 years but it will eventually take its toll.
The band are now experimenting with turning the backline down and letting our 3k PA do the work.

This was her ninth birthday. He'll be fine with a full size.

Last time I posted that, Mickey_D had just bought a kit for his son, wonder how he's getting on...

Did you see my nephews kit? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HquPm1_ftKU
Nearly £2000 worth but you ought to hear him one year on, I'll have to get some film.

If £2000 is basic then yes.
I would have thought my Pearl Export and Yamaha Stage kits were basic.

on about the player?

also: i payed 2k for my shells alone :) not being big headed just saying. 2k in the drumming world isnt that much im afraid :( not for a full kit with hardware and cymbals

fact. with all the cymbals, skins, sticks I go through on a regular basis it can be an expensive hobby.

but there is no NEED for 2k's worth of shells...not until the child is old enough to get a job ;)

I STILL dont have 2k of shells. just dont need them. and a touing kit (like mine, 80's Pearl export) gets battered and bruised by an all manner of drummers, still comes back for more.

sham69 used it the other night. drummers comment whilst soundchecking "Gorgeous toms!".
gobsmacked. old skins, pearl export kit. hmm. i think maybe his ears have gone as well :p

He was just turned 6 in that video and actually headlined that drum workshop with drummers who were up to 14.
He's now on grade 3 aged 7 and doing jazz.

ahh hes not doing so bad then...

at lozza, my kit is very expensive to build up to what it is, its got bumps scrapes the lot, it comes with the job i suppose! but its only me who uses it, so its just wear and tear from touring all over and getting packed and unpacked with hardcases all the time.

You're probably hitting like a girl then :p

I always find this is one of those really weird things about drummers.
In the last 8 years the band I'm with now has had 9 drummers and some of them hit the drums like animals but had to be mic'd up.
Other drummers like Paul (RIP) here - http://www.disturbinthepeace.co.uk/video/sanctuary.avi looked as though they only touched their kit but were really loud and didn't need mic'ing up

It's all in the tuning/equipment.
More resonance = more volume.
Choice of sticks has a lot to do with it as well.

yeah sure i hit like a girl.... dont think so.

i know how to the play drums im not stupid, and just whacking them as hard as you can is bad techniques, its all about dynamics whats the point in hitting it as hard as you can, you then have no headroom to change your dynamics within songs.

as for sticks i have Vic Firth Extreme 7a's, slightly longer stick than usual. I use to be heavily into playing with Vater but have moved on now.
