Buying a faulty HP 30" monitor?

i've got 2 dell 2407wfpb monitors both didnt work, got them for free, opened them up and the capacitors had gone in both on the power board, £8 later and 2 fully working monitors :D

I spoke to a guy who was selling one on ebay and he said he had had trouble with cheap cables so i took a punt. It was less than £20 for an HP/Monster branded cable so not crazy expensive.

A dvi-d dual link though? There is a difference, as I'm sure you are aware.
I have the same screen in front of me at work, we 'found' it :) A few of the others messed with displayport to dvi, hdmi to dvi adaptors etc etc trying to get it to work on their laptops.
Once they were fed up of being unable to get anything above the resolution you describe, I purchased a usb powered dell bizlink displayport to duallink dvi adaptor for £25 and a duallink dvi cable from amazon for £5.
Plugged it all in thinking i was the dogs-pods to get the correct resolution but horrible ghosting screen :(
Just before it went in the bin I decided to try another of the monitors 3 dvi ports and to my great amazement the 2nd one worked!!
Hurray, I now look down on the peasants at work with their 24" screens!

Yep definately a dual link cable. Single link wouldnt let me select anything above 1280 x 800

Yes With dual link I could select it but it just displayed a blank screen. With single link (or dual link in to the single link port on my GFX card) the slider only went up to 1280x800.
Still clear as mud? :)
