Buying a high mileage BMW 330d - what to look out for?

trust me i'm an audi man through and through and my next a4 is going to be a 2.5 tdi quattro (moving from a 1.9Tdi currently)

please stand corrected

available in both 2.5 and 3 litre Tdi formats with or without 4wd :)

dont believe me?

www.audi.co.uk

Thanks, that site confirmed I am correct and the largest engine size available in a diesel A3 is the 2.0 TDI 140.

Perhaps you mean A4?

Edit: I see you do :)

I've not managed to try an A4 yet but initial impressions from noseying around inside is that it's not quite as nice as the 3 Series and is, of course, FWD unless you get a Quattro. Went to Plymouth Audi yesterday for a closer look but they had no used previous shape A4's :(

but my original point still stands :)

an audi a4 V6 tdi is far and away better than the bloody sales rep mobile

Please justify this opinion - in what way is it far and away better? I've driven the 3 Series but not the A4, the A4 would have to be exceptionally good to be far and away better, which is not what general opinion seems to be? What is it that makes it better?

A4 points over the E46 Beemer(have both sitting on the drive (mines the audi and the beemer me dads)

a4 build quality is equal to the beemers
engine is just as good although maybe the audi edges this in reliability terms
audi is cheaper on a like for like basis
The audi isnt a bmw (doesnt have the same image)

audi available with the quattro underpinnings :) :)

pretty comparable point for point really and a lot is down to personal preference but the main areas the audi wins on are price availability of 4 wheel drive reliabitilty/cost or parts/servicing and imho looks and image

Hmmmmm so you think the A4 is 'far and away better' but the only thing you can say it's better on is the fact it 'is not a BMW?' :)

thats probably the biggest factor although you blatantly missed my point about 4x4 cheaper more reliable etc etc. you need an eyetest?

But 4x4 is not neccesarily better - whether its better or not depends on your tastes - there are some who would argue RWD > 4WD and others who would say 4WD > RWD, and neither are wrong.

No, I don't need an eye-test, but thanks for the concern.

Regardless of how reliable and how bad the mileage is the fact remains. You will get a lot less with resale with high mileage. Think about it 100k@12k will be lucky to get 4k in 3 years time.

SWe all know the car will do loads more however the price guides change accordingly

rwd is nice in the dry which aint the uk for 3/4's of the year :)

nah the beemers nice but the audi is just as capable and cheaper too :)

Assuming he buys a 2002ish car with that mileage on, please show me where I can buy one 3 years older with 140k for £4k please :)

me too :) lol try picking up an E46 for anything that isnt poverty spec or mega miles for sensible money :)
i did actually look at one myself before i bought the audi

the 3litre straight six is a lovely lump :) but a tad agricultural (tho they do chip well)

I looked at a 330 Sport Touring before the A4 but it seemed smaller and more cramped inside. The insurance was a lot more aswell for some reason so I got the A4 instead. No regrets so far though, I really enjoy driving it.
