Buying a new bed

I went into Dreams on my high street today. Beds are really expensive! I want to replace my really old creaking double bed which has 4 drawers, two to each side. That's what I was originally looking for when I went into Dreams, but I was made aware of Ottoman storage beds which are much better, like this one with a gas lift frame.

This would be ideal for me as I need lots more space for clothes and I could store a ton of stuff in one of these babies. Dreams quoted me £678.98 inc delivery, and if I had them assemble it and take away my old one, £766.98.
Too much. And that doesn't even include the headboard! I've looked on the bay and have found Ottoman beds for around £250 to £380 including headboard and delivery. The one pictured is £279.95 in black white or brown, 4' 6" double, and pocket sprung mattress.

Anyone had any experience of cheaper beds online, anything to watch out for? Do Dreams sell higher quality or are they just a typical high street ripoff? I suspect the latter.

Id say buy the base separately from EBay or such like and then buy your mattress from somewhere else online or EBay as you will be able to get a better deal.
I think this place comes highly recommended from the other mattress threads i've seen on here - http://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk/

You'll end up with an all round better bed than buying from Dreams I would imagine. Also don't pay for someone to put it up, putting beds like that together is a piece of ****!

I'm no expert, but my observations are as follows;

'bed frames' in pretty much any style are reasonably cheap.

Good mattresses are expensive. Ikeas £100 mattresses for example are awful.

I've never been in a position where I've needed to buy both at the same time, but If I was, I think I'd probably buy the frame and mattress separate, that way your getting a frame you really like the look of, a mattress as good as you can afford, and your not paying over the odds for a 'combo deal'...I get the feeling a lot of these are swanky looking deals come with sub-standard mattresses.

I wouldn't trust them personally

I got mine from Ikea, was a MALM, really nice bed.

Also mate you've got to think, for something that you're going to spend at least 8 hours a night laying in, recharging your batteries for the coming day, sleep is probably the most important thing you'll need health wise.
Think carefully, choose wisely.

+1 for Factory Beds Direct. I wouldn't bother with those lift up bed jobs, just get a metal frame and some boxes for underneath if you really need the storage. Cheaper, more space, more flexible and looks better. Plus a decent mattress from FBD will weigh a fair amount and I wouldn't want to have to lift that every time I need something from under the bed.

We bought two mattresses from FBD and two different frames from Dreams and Tesco Direct. All excellent.

I paid 400 for a solid acacia bed frame online, same bed was more than double in the department stores, was just called a different name.

I did spend 2k on a mattress and 600 or so on Hungarian goose down as well and fair amount on white company linen....worth it as its the most comfiest bed ever! :-p

Thanks, I'll check out that site. Looking at the quote sheet I was given from Dreams, the bed is a 'Vienna Ottoman' £389.99. Seems to be around that price online. But I'm not sure if there's anything special about it compared to the sub £200 bases? I think it's Faux leather same as the cheaper ones and looks the same.

The mattress is indeed very important though. I compared two in the shop. The one I liked was £250 as it was much springier than a slightly cheaper one next to it (where you could feel the springs if you pressed in on it). Not sure how much I'll need to pay at FBD to to get the same quality.

Yes, mattresses are expensive, or at least good ones are. If you spend $250 on one it'll likely be mediocre at best and need replacing in a short period of time. A good mattress will last for a very long time, have a guarantee to go with it, and, far more importantly, will give you a good nights sleep.

You spend a third of your life in your bed. Scrimping on it seems an odd decision to take.

My sister bought that one in the photo, great bed so I bought one but slightly different and half the price £299 back in 2011. - http://www.dreams.co.uk/genoa-bedstead-brown/

I read the ones on eBay aren't built as strong, mines is very heavy and well built, moved house once, just took the sides apart.

Then ordered a mattress of mattressman online. I paid half of what my sister paid at Dreams and she agrees, I made the right choice.

I got that exact bed from Tesco. Great bed.

Mattress came vacuum-packed like a sausage

Yeah I definitely want a good mattress. Don't necessarily agree with you about a £250 mattress needing replacing in a short time. The one I have now I've slept on for over 20 years (I know, don't laugh) and it still doesn't sag. It's an orthopaedic mattress and I wouldn't have paid more than the equivalent of £250 back then. I never had a bad back or anything but someone recommended this type of mattress to me. I do like firm mattresses anyway.

Just took a look at the mattresses at factory beds direct, too expensive for me.
Which mattress did you buy at mattressman, is it firm, can you feel the springs if you push with your hand, and how long have you had it?

ITT I discover a good bed cost an inordinate amount of money. Not boding well for an almost 21 year old who wants to move out soon after he graduates. If I can even get the money together to move out :P

i bought a very cheap bed from sainsbury online. The support from matress is not uniformly distribute. The centre of the matress is higher than its edges. My wife has slided down to the floor for many times. Avoid these cheap poorly designed bed

Beds and mattresses can be as cheap or as expensive as you like. Personally I would say to spend on the bed in line with the rest of the furniture in your house or room. That way you're probably spending the amount you want to.
