Buying a new bed

Beds and mattresses can be as cheap or as expensive as you like. Personally I would say to spend on the bed in line with the rest of the furniture in your house or room. That way you're probably spending the amount you want to.

The Genoa was mentioned above so do you think this one will be ok, ie, genuine like the one at Dreams?

This is the same bed at much more money at Dreams:

Also, can you choose me a firm mattress or perhaps medium firm from this lot that would be good? I'm wondering if any of the sub £200 ones would be good? More cm depth is preferable, ie, over 18cm.

As others have said spend as much as you can on the mattress, as it's something that should last you for years, and is important. You can skimp a little on the frame but I just went for a £300 oak frame.

Isn't bending mattresses supposed to be really bad for the structure?

If you can vacuum pack your mattress into a sausage shape it's not a very good mattress, unless it's one of the fully memory foam ones.
The only ones I've ever seen packaged like that are the really cheap, crap paper thin ones you'd get in cheap student digs and places like that.

I'm just wondering, what with online prices generally cheaper than the high street, if a £150 to £200 mattress on sites like mattressman is equivalent quality to the more expensive ones in Dreams, etc?

I'd be careful of those style beds with only two pumps, the GF has one and the pump on one side has gone after a little over a year. We've just bought a new one that's come in at just over £1300 (with headboard and mattress) and that was mainly down to getting a memory foam jobby as that was the only way we could get something comfortable for both of us.

The base itself came to just under £500 I think, but its two parts clamped together, with 4 pumps.

We just bought a new bed at the weekend, we had a tight budget but still spent a small fortune!

Ended up buying a divan for £1000, was up in the sale for £1300 so was pleased to get a bit more knocked off.

It is a silentnight set, 'supposedly' up for £2500+ not in the sale.

Amazing the difference though between a £200 - £500 mattress and the more expensive ones though. Cant wait to get it delivered next week!

definitely get a gas lift ottoman, i got one from tesco direct for like £250 reduced from like £500.

it's faux leather, huge headboard, 2 x hydraulic pistons, and very well built.

the under bed storage is superb, and the hydraulic lift is a must due to how heavy the mattress is.

i bought my mattress online for like £350 ish, i got it from a not too well known retailer and it was the last one in stock (reduced to clear), the same mattress was £1200 ish on debenhams website.

so basically i got £1700 RRP bed and mattress for £600.

i would spend the majority of the budget on the best mattress you can.

best mattress = pocket sprung and firm or extra firm
best base = hydraulic lift leather ottoman

as for pillows and duvets, i spent like £400+ on a luxurious hungarian goose down stuff, from duvet and pillow warehouse. it was terrible, it leaked everywhere, and so did the replacements.

in the end i bought some pillows and duvets from M and S, anti allergy stuff, and although it was less than half the price of the goose down stuff, it's been 100 times better.

that one is worth the extra if you can afford it

best to wait for a sale and use codes like i did tbh.

this is my mattress

£1200 from debenhams online otherwise

£350 from there

its £425 from mattressman

so you know it's a great deal.

the mattress is bulletproof.

it takes at least 2 people to carry it.

i can turn it around by myself but with great difficulty, it took 3 of us to get it up the stairs.

it's built to last forever. comes with 5 year gaurantee too.

We spent £2k on a oak super king bed and pocket sprung mattress with a layer of memory foam. Best money I've spent in a long while. We went to the local bed centre chose it all then the guy price matched it from online retailers.

I went into Dreams on my high street today. Beds are really expensive! I want to replace my really old creaking double bed which has 4 drawers, two to each side. That's what I was originally looking for when I went into Dreams, but I was made aware of Ottoman storage beds which are much better, like this one with a gas lift frame.

I have that frame! One of the side rails holding the frame broke on mine within 2 months. The retailer sent out replacement parts and I had to take it apart and rebuild it. I'm getting future beds from Warren Evans. Bit more money but well other it as they're much better built.

Either way you go, spend time in shops laying on different mattresses in your usual sleeping style. Negotiate lower pricing and buy one you've laid on. Don't buy a mattress online.

Getting informations about bed

Hey, I have had sleeping issues. I asked for help on this site Mattress Enthusiast and I am more than satisfied with them. They helped me choose best bed for me and I would recommend everyone to go to check their site.

I had a look at ottoman beds from a few places and they all seemed really cheap and nasty. fake shiny artificial leather wrapped around a cheap chipboard frame. Looked like the kind of bed that will be a tatty mess in 10 years or less.

IMO you cant go wrong with a solid oak bed, they will last forever and can be had for around £400. Obviously lack storage, but you can buy plastic tubs that are the right size to slide under a bed for storage.
