Buying a Nissan Qashqai

Even a decent saloon or hatchback has as much room, if not more, than these little SUV's. :p

Not even remotely true..

My CX-5 had 503 Litres of boot space which is fractionally more than a 3 series estate..

The QQ is smaller though, but its still 'large' by any saloon/hatch standard..

Mini SUVs like the Ford Ecosport / Mini Countryman etc are indeed no more practical than some large hatch/saloons and certainly not load luggers, but they are small in comparison.. the QQ/CRV/CX-5 are the next size up..

I remember when I went to see a CX-5 in the dealers, I thought it was 'mini' and when I spied it at the opposite end of the showroom I assumed that the fact it towered over the Mazda 3 was due to it being on some 'stand', however when I walked over I realised it wasn't and it was just that big.. I had to use a step ladder to clean the roof..

QQ is not bigger than a decent estate, its taller but the cabin space and luggage space is on a par with something like a Golf.

Considering the CX5 is based on a Mazda 6, you expect it to be bigger than a 3 series estate, which has always been a 'small' estate.

We picked up a pre-reg N-Tec+ a few months back, only useful thing I think it's missing from the Tekna is the quick clear windscreen. Not a fan of leather seats particularly when it's going to have two kids in it most of the time.

Size wise it's on par with a focus really, more room in the back seats than my Octavia but obviously missing on the boot space. We have what I'd consider to be a chunk pram (Uppababy Vista) and yes it pretty much takes up the entire boot (with the pram bit rather than the seat) but that's for a limited time really for us. Still room for a good few bags of shopping, change back, buggy board and a few things to keep the kids entertained.

It's obviously not going to be as big in the back as the larger SUVs, but with the right car seats you can still get a third passenger in the back - if someone is willing enough to want to sit between two kids! I'm about 6 foot 2 and can sit in the back comfortably behind the drivers seat with the seat far enough back as if I was driving. Not sure how much more you need?

We have the 1.5 diesel, it's got enough power but coming from a VRS it's always going to be slow! A bit of reading recommended the 1.5 over the 1.6 in a fair few places and currently averaging about 46 mpg.

Decent level of toys on the N-Tec+ trim, if there is anything particular you want to know just ask.

I was responding more to the mini-SUV's segment being smaller than a hatch saloon. I know the QQ is 'small' for it's segment (well the new shape is larger than the old shape), but the CX-5 is certainly not small. The boot is only 20 litres smaller than a 5 series estate, with more rear legroom/height etc..

The Mini Countryman (The wife has one) is a smaller vehicle, micro-SUV sized.. but actually it's still got a
hatch sized boot (larger than a focus, smaller than a golf) with far more rear legroom, it actually feels much larger inside than I was expecting..

I know people think the QQ is smaller than a hatch but it really isn't.. it's just not massively bigger, the boot is 430Lites vs 380 on the golf (only 320 on the focus), and whilst it doesn't have much more rear legroom, it's not smaller..

All I would say is that if you want something bigger than a QQ, there are many mini-SUVs that are bigger, the segment is quite varied, so you can prioritise on whatever you want, more cabin space or more boot space, or both if you go for the larger ones in that segment..

Nice one thanks,

I decided not to go with the Tekna; I don't need 19" alloys, leather heated seats.

I have gone for the 1.6 diesel N-Tec+ on a 15 plate, it does have the heated front windscreen and all the other toys like surround camera's, sat-nav, lane departure warning etc.

Went out in it yesterday evening for a drive with my son in his car seat in the back and there was plenty of room for him, so we are all happy with it.

Didn't someone say the Qashqai didn't fit a pram and additional cargo which is the main reason you want one? Then you went and bought one?

My wife as a QQ and loves it. With me it is a love/hate thing!

Ours is a 62 plate so the previous shape n-tec+ so has some neat gadgets such as 360 camera etc.

We are coming up to owning it for 3 years and never missed a beat, never needed anything other than me changing the disks and pads.

Ours has the 1.5 dci engine and to be honest it is fine for the requirements we have for the car, very economical with a lifetime average of 49mpg and easily sees 60mpg on a good run.

I am yet to sit inside the newer QQ but the cabin, rear leg room and boot is a little tight. Infact we struggle to fit anything else in the boot once the Bugaboo buffalo is in, we have the Bee also which folds up smaller which helps a little.

My wife has just started a new community nurse job and will be travelling up into the Dales so we are in 2 minds on whether to get a low % loan and pay off the finance and run the car into the ground and enjoy the extra mileage expenses or upgrade to some sort of 4x4 (may even go for a QQ 4x4) but the wife is more than happy to keep it.

For me the QQ is a car to go from A to B economically and without any problems. It will never set the world on fire but for a small family car it does the job very well.

I'm supposed to be picking the car up tomorrow, but thinking about pulling out of the deal.

Salesman will go mardy and be not happy with me, and I expect that. But if I let him know I want the upgraded model instead, he should be OK with that, especially if there is more commission?

Don't worry about pulling out the deal (yes as a sales person myself we hate a cancelled order, but it happens!), you are spending a wad of cash so you need to be 100% happy with what you are getting.

We went with the n-tec+ and never once wished we had gone from the one above to gain leather and whatever else was included. Just make sure you are happy with what you are going for and push the button :)

I have an IX35 SE nav (14 plate). Like it, but no fun to drive.
Mate looked at mine then bought a QQ.....he got rid of it after 6 months saying it was woefully underpowered.
I agree the CX5 looks nice. To be fair the IX35 is a good family SUV, plenty of adult leg room in hte back, but MPG aint good at all. I get 46mpg from my 1.7dci, when most other makes are easily hitting 50mpg.
I test drove the new HRV and all the mpg figures were well into the 60's. I always take 10% off for BS factor, but that would still give high 50s.
Mazda have stated that they aren't moving into hybrids as they are getting 30% extra efficiency out of their existing engine line, so again the CX5 still looks like a good car to have.

I want a hybrid next! ;)

Looking at a Qashqai....perhaps the QQ due to the slightly better room (not entirely sure exactly how much it is - 30cm wheelbase increase?)

Our budget is £8.5k, under 70k and no older than 2010...

But for that money, whatelse should i be looking at?

We have a newborn, we want to have another in the next 2 years, so im looking at SUV's because of this.

My partner is not a fan of the Estate either, so thats out of the question :-/

I don't understand why people with children want a Gashqai and equivalent.

An estate car is far more practical IMO, have more boot space for prams etc.. and are generally better cars.

Either go full hog and get a landrover or a range rover, or a proper big 4x4, or don't bother. Then again I just have an irrational hatred for SUV/Crossover cars :p

Freefaller is just joking, his favourite car is the Juke, he loves it.

:p

C4 Piccasso, a later model has three full sized isofix seats which will defiantly help. (Even if it is french).
