Hey all,

As the thread title says im buying a PS3 next week (whoop whoop :D) which will be my first console since the PS1.

Anywho, im a tad confused about the display options. It seems a bit sad to spend all that cash on the PS3 just to play it on a fishbowl tv that only supports 640x480 or whatever. (Buying a HD/LCD tv isnt an option, as im extremely poor. :p )

So i wanna try and run it thru my PC monitor. Which would give me these options (that im not sure will even work):

- HDMI to DVI adaptor

- HDMI to DVI to VGA adaptor :o

- AV/Composite/Whatever (3 leads - Red, Yellow, White) to VIVO

Which leaves me with a few problems.

- I dont even know if the 40gb version comes with a HDMI cable (will research one that later)

- How do i get around changing what my monitor is plugged into? From pc to ps3 and vise versa. (The back of my PC doesnt have the best access)

- Will i even be able to play at higher resolutions on my monitor than my fishbowl tv?

Regardless of the answers, im still buying one. :D

Thanks for the help!

Is your monitor HDCP compatible? If not, don't bother as you won't get any HD resolutions out of it.

Edit: And no, they don't conme with an HDMI cable.

I know you want a PS3, but have you even contemplated an Xbox360?
You could play that in HD on a monitor and have a strong selection of exclusives too.

Yeah, i thought about a 360.. for about 6 seconds. Not too keen on em really, i hate the shape of the control pad, and the failure rate is a tad scary, although i think that was fixed with recent versions of the console? Plus there's some PS3 games that i just HAVE TO have, and they're PS3 exclusives. :)

And err yeah, i somehow doubt my monitor is HDCP compatable. Its one of Hanns-G's first 19inch TFT's... which were a budget model, so i dont think it'll support it. :(

Apparently the VGA cable which ships with the PS2 Linux Kit allows you to get round the issue of HDCP and play in HD through your monitor's VGA port. http://linuxplay.com/acatalog/

From this thread, maybe rp2000 will see this and comment as he never updated that to say if the cable he ordered worked. It would set you back about £21.49+VAT

The company's online system would not accept my debit card, and they wanted me to do it over the phone. So I lost interest, rapidly... Else my plan was to buy it and test it, [post on forum, then let people know to buy it. (I may still do it in the near future, it's just I barely have time to play my ps3/360 let alone do tests for others atm).

I am certain this HDCP thing is not related as VGA is an analogue connection V1N666 used to have this cable, he connected to an old 1024*768 projector and he played games and blu-rays on it.

With the VGA cable the connection is analogue so HDCP will not come into it.

I would be tempted to buy that cable as a test (and would have done myself, but apart from satsifying my curiousity and helping others, I have no personal need for this).

Id definitely get a PS3 if I knew that cable worked at the moment it would be PS3 plus HDTV which is just too much for me.

This is why I wanted to test it, more so to eleviate other people who are stuck deciding and VGA support is important to them. And Also you can't get the VGA cable for love of money, yet the site I referenced to sell them on behalf of Sony and have no shortages!!

So if it works it is a bit of a find!!.

I remembered that product when it was mentioned a while ago after I'd posted :p

It would be great if that worked!

Edit: After a quick google it would seem that this doesn't work.

The controller is widely regarded as the best ever, in stark contrast, I and a lot of others would describe the Six-Axis as the worst pad ever.
The new Xbox360's aren't failing much at all, I'd say there are more new PS3 threads for failed 40gb PS3's than there are new Xbox360's (something my friend also said who works at a competitor).

Plus there's some PS3 games that i just HAVE TO have, and they're PS3 exclusives. :)
I take it those are next year. But you can't "have" to play them that much as they're all sequels to games that appeared on the PS2 and you didn't play those.

You're being incredibly foolish disregarding the Xbox360 after 6 seconds. It's cheaper, offers the best games range, equal power and the best controller. The PS3's advantage is Blu-Ray and free Multiplayer.

Well then I am going to be very disappointed as I just ordered one!!!!

I will still try, on Monday when it arrives. If it worked for V1N it will work for me, I am sure (hopefully).

A controller with the d-pad like the one on the 360 can not even begin to be considered the best ever.

It doesn't matter how many games the 360 might have, if the ones that he wants are on the PS3 then it seems to me hes making the correct decision.

As for the VGA cable, had a quick look and it seems inconclusive as to wether or not it works. Some say it does some say the screen is entirely green. I've just put an order in for one so I'll find out sometime next week hopefully.

And in this day and age, how many games use it? All games use analogue. The 360 has one flaw, it's D-Pad, everyone knows that. The Six-Axis has lots.

So he says, but he doesn't JUST have to play them as if he did he'd have gotten a PS2 and played a lot of better games.

When i said i stopped thinking about the 360 after 6 seconds, i didnt mean it literally. I actually thought about it for atleast 8 or 9. :p

But seriously, i dont like the 360 controller. I dont like its shape, i dont like its layout, it's bulky and it doesnt feel right to me. Maybe it's because im too used to the playstation style pad, i dunno, either way, i dont like it.

And no i dont JUST have to play PS3 only games, but there isnt one single 360 only game that i want. There is however a few PS3 exclusive games that i do want... and the rest of the games i want, have been/will be released on both machines.

Oh and free multiplayer is extremely important for me. I already pay for an internet connection, so i dont really want to pay all over again just so i can actually use it the way i want to.

:)

Most games use analogue but not all, ever tried to play some live arcade games with it or fighting games? Dire.

So he says, but he doesn't JUST have to play them as if he did he'd have gotten a PS2 and played a lot of better games.

I'm not quite sure what you mean? The games he wants are PS3 exclusive, why we would he want to play games that are on a previous console if he wants the latest versions?

I play DOA4 with it quite happily. And all my arcade games work fine with analogue sticks, can you name one that is 'dire'?

Sorry I forgot the disclaimer that I wasn't sprouting this as fact and that in my opinion I personally am unable to play fighting games with analogue sticks and much prefer d-pads. Also the same goes for classic games on the arcade which should, in my opinion, be played with a d-pad, eg bomberman.

To be honest Insanity you've asked this question on the wrong forums, as you can see some people on here are more interested in selling 360 to you than answering any PS3 related questions.

I would try the EU Playstation forums if you want specific answers to (arguably) a tricky question, I have HDTV so have no idea how connecting PS3 to a monitor works and what affect HDCP has (if any).
