I know theres a few of you on here who are in the know about watches, so I thought I would ask you lovely people :)

I have narrowed down a couple of brands that I can afford and that I like the look of. Raymond Weil and Omega. The models I have been looking at are the Raymond Weil Tango range, and the Omega Seamaster and Speedmaster Range. I think I prefer the Speedmaster for looks and functionality....but I am learning how to dive soon so I dont know how useful the Seamaster Helium release valve will be :p

What are Raymond Weil watches reputation like? I know that Omega have a reputation for making very good watches and they hold their value very well, but I prefer the look of the Tango range.

Any advice welcome :)

Raymond Weil are not up there with Omega

Don't forget the speedmasters ( well most of them ) are not suitable for swimming never mind diving

The helium vlave is just a gimmic for the vast majority of people bitthe Seamaster would be ok for diving anyway where the speedmaster would not

The trouble is, is that Im only looking at a £900 max, and that is the sort of price where seamasters start, but a nice RW can be had for that price.

Can you really not use the Speedmasters for swimming at all?

nope , most are rated at 30m which is "splashproof" , 50m is "light swimming"

don't forget that it is easy to get 15-20% off the RRP of an Omega

hmmmm, I dont think I would want to spend that sort of money on a watch and not even be able to use it for swimming.

Ive been looking at Blitz, they seem to have reasonably good discounts.

What do you think about Longines? I like the Flagship model. Im not a fan of TAG Heuer, and I cant really think of any other makes that I can afford that appeal to me.

It has to have automatic movement too, which costs more.

Longines are good , better than RW

re blitz , they are ok but you do not get an official warranty ( they have their own ) , some grey dealera also remove serial numbers

you should be able to get a normal omega dealer to match/beat the web prices anyway

would recommen against Tag , they don't make their own watches or parts , they are just a disign and marketing company , a lot of their stuff is asian made and just packed in Switzerland ( this allows them to be called swiss made )

Interesting.....any recommendations on where to look for watches apart from Blitz? I know that there are highstreet dealers such as Beaverbrooks, but apart from them Im not sure where to look.

I would definitely prefer to buy from an official dealer with an official serial number. How long is an Omega warranty?

Yep, I knew that about TAG which puts me off them. Also, I heard that they dont hold value very well at all.

Maybe I will look into Longines too. The company has some nice interesting history behind it, like Omega.

Omegas have a 2yr wattanty ( 3 on the PO )

I'm sure the Omega website will list dealers in your area, look for the independents not ones that are part of a big chain

re Tag and depreciation then yes you will lose 50% the minute you walk out of the door on most models

Cheers,

Im going to check out a few Omega's, RW and Longines. There should be a few dealers around Reading. If not I might head into London to have a look.

Whats their staying power in terms of value? I'm not a collector by any means but I guess its nice to know, incase I do get one.

Thats the beauty!

May I pass on a tip I learned from a very experienced old Navy diver I worked with some years ago on a salvage job.

"Never strap on to your wrist anything you can't afford to replace next pay day."

I have a Seiko that I've worn for years on a number of jobs involving the use of of crowbars, hammers and chisels and gelignite. It probably cost less than half of an Omega or a Raymond Weil. The watch you show in your picture looks nice but does not remotely look like a diver's watch.
