We currently have a blu-ray / DVD player in the sitting room that also allows us to watch Netflix and Amazon Prime Video but it really sucks. Sometimes it doesn't even connect to the network (even though it is connected using a wired ethernet connection) and just fails to play Netflix. Plus it is slow as hell.

I was thinking about replacing it with an Xbox One for a couple of reasons. I know it will constantly be updated software wise and will support all the major streaming services (I'm also thinking of getting Crunchyroll so support for that is useful as well).

I could also plug it into my cable TV TIVO box so I wouldn't need to switch channels to go from TV to blu-ray for instance. That would be cool.

Also I do like Xbox games (I used to have a 360 and the original Xbox, the only reason I didn't get an Xbox One at launch was because of the whole Kinect thing that Microsoft insisted on making you buy now they have removed the Kinect sensor I'm happy to buy one) so it would be cool to play Halo again.

Plus I have a Windows 10 PC and from my understanding you can stream games from the Xbox One to the Windows 10 PC. If that is the case I can play games upstairs instead of having to use the sitting room.

The only downside I can see is having to have an Xbox Live subscription.

Can anyone think of any reasons as to why I wouldn't want an Xbox One for this role? So far it looks like a good deal at about £230.

I'm currently thinking the same.....

over the last month I have been looking into the best all in one box which will be simple to use for all the family and allow for streaming plex.

at the moment the xbox one is ahead, with the ability to be a DVR, apps for plex and amazon/Netflix.

the only thing I'm researching know is can the xbox WOL my media PC and will a company make a twin tuner?.

If I'm right you need a Kinect for vice commands which will be handy.

I always feel like a twit when using voice commands so I never use them. Same reason I never use the Google voice service on my mobile phone or Cortana on Windows 10 :).

Will be interesting what other people say who own an Xbox One.

Seems like it would suit you well. If you do get one I'd recommended the official media remote as well, it saves having to always be turning on a controller when you want to do something.

I'm using the USB TV tuner to watch Freeview through the Xbox and it works really well, nice being able to use voice commands to switch channels too "Xbox watch BBC one" for example, or to mute the TV when a **** advert comes on. Hopefully they add DVR capabilities soon (at the moment you can only pause/rewind live TV, you can't record it)

Our main uses besides games are: All 4, iPlayer, Netflix, Media Player (to play content from an external drive) and TV & Film (I think this is the app that is used when you stream video content from a networked computer).

Go for it!

I have read somewhere they are making tuner plugin or updating xbox so that it can record. If a company can make a twin tuner USB plugin, for recording and watching other channels at the same time. I will be getting one.

Also the rumour is 4k Netflix and Amazon is possible on the Xbox

It's a bit crap that the BBC don't have their Sport app on Xbone. It's always been for PlayStation (3 and 4) for some reason.

I hardly ever watch BBC sport because they never show any bloomin' Cricket. Sky Sports only for me I'm afraid but because I'm with Virgin Media I don't think I can use the Sky app unfortunately :(.

I use my XB1 primarily as my media center. I use it for Twitch.tv, catching up on the latest YouTube subscriptions, BBC iPlayer and watching Blurays. I also love the official remote.

My PS4 is my primary console for games instead, as that's what most of my friends are on.

Gold isn't that expensive if you shop here

The X1 sounds ideal for you.

I've watched a few DVDs and to be honest, it's not bad, nor is it brilliant. I know it's DVD, so I don't expect Blu-Ray quality, thus satisfied with its playback.

No juddering with my PAL DVDs though.

How quick is it to say get into netflix on the x1?

Was thinking about x1 for mainly media needs as well and the odd game, currently use amazon fire TV box for netflix which is very quick to get into netflix, how would the x1 compare.

You click the app and it loads a few seconds later. Unfortunately I've never felt the need to time it if that's what you're asking, but it seems quick enough

What I mean is from turning the x1 on from standby or however It is on the console?

For example if I used Netflix on my ps4 it would still take a time coming out of standby mode.
