Buying components abroad...

Hi everyone. I would just like a few questions answered if possible, and any advice is appreciated.

I am going to New York for a week, on December 26th, and was wondering if it would be ok to buy my computer components out there? i'm only going to get a motherboard, processor and RAM. I have noticed that ALL computer parts are cheaper in the USA then here in the UK, so thought i might snatch at the chance.

Could any of you tell me if it would be perfectly reasonable to buy these components from NY? For example, what would i do if one of my components were to develop a fault during its warranty? would i just send it back directly to the manufacturer here in the UK?

I'm looking to get either the Asus P5B Deluxe, or Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard. I'm also looking to get the Intel E6600 - they cost as little as £160 in the US. Im also looking to get 1gb either 667mhz or 800mhz RAM.

Again, any advice in any way is appreciated greatly.

Thanks a lot, and am looking forward to a response! :)

You are probably going to battle to send to manufacturers in the uk, cos it would de facto be classed as grey imports. The manufacturer in the uk most likely has a 5-10%, mabye even more, markup on the products they supplying. They then offer the service for returns, etc. You will most likely have to send the components back to the shop u buying from and they in turn would return to the us manufacturer. Huge shipping costs involved. Also if u do decide to buy, you may as well ask that it be rigged up in the shop to show that all is working. Sods law will have it that u will get back and the mobo is borked.

Thanks for the hasty reply :) All the advice is being taken onboard!

Anyone got anymore advice? i would like to know the pros and cons, and lots of peoples thoughts on this...

Depends what the allowances are at customs in Heathrow. You may have to pay import duties on some / all the components pls VAT. Now u -£100. ;)

Not sure about the rules on this, but check it out.

Flying back to Gatwick, highly unlikely we'll get checked out at customs, but again a good point...Its a risk i would be willing to take.

very true, im only saving about £15 anyway from the mobo, so im best off getting it here in the UK. As for memory and cpu - its saving bundles. Any advice on the RAM i should get? is the 1 i posted above ok?

Id go for 2gb and get memory that is listed on the mobo manufacturers compatibilty list. Also take out the prices on those items. Against forum rules.

whoops, sorry - new user :)

What mobo do you think is best to go with?

Oh yeah i almost forgot about graphics card... im not a hardcore gamer, and i've found good prices for the XFX 7600GT XXX Edition. I've heard that DX10 is arriving next year though, but will the graphics cards be extremely overpriced at first?

I'm really clueless...

how would you buy it in the states most off the shops you can walk in are just like pc world or comparisions here ie expensive but the websites are cheaper but you need a usa address for them to ship too

I have thought of this, and i decided that if prices were too close to those here back in the UK, then i wouldn't bother with getting components there, but i am hopeful. Do you know if you can barter with stores in NY? i.e. "i've seen this cheaper on the net and back here in the UK, is there any way you can lower your price?". I know its not like Turkey where you can get something down from say £20 to £2 lol

not in the places ive been i think the have a best buy store but there is virtually no difference to prices here ,im just back from ther states a couple of days and i found our web prices far lower than there store prices

maybe i've just been extremely optomistic... ah never mind... if i cant find the things i want cheap, i'll just get a Gigabyte DS3 and E6300, and OC it...
