Buying domain name question?

I have just bought a .com domain name for my girlfriends business but it appears there is already a fairly large US shop set up under that name. Is this usual? I bought the domain from go daddy and haven't bought one previously so this is new to me, is this now the fault of the shop in the US for not renewing the domain or have go daddy messed up? Thought I would ask here first before making a fool of myself to customer services.

Hopefully it's a massive US business who forgot to renew and they're going to offer you £100k for the domain back

What was the shop?

if it is infact theirs, set up your website with it and redirect all traffic. They will then poo them selves and in time contact you asking wth.

Problem is if you bought it after they set up you could be taken to court for domain squatting(I think).

Are you sure they're not winding down? Seems a hell of a screw up to drop a domain unless it wasn't their main one.

Edit: did they own the domain previously or is it just the same name?

As randomshenans said it doesn't look like you actually bought it. Are you sure you haven't just paid for them to try and snap it up when it becomes available?

i dont believe it works like that. if you have a legitimate claim to that domain then it can just be transferred.

I think the more interesting point here is that you spelled your girlfriend's name wrong. How would she feel if she knew?
