Are there any gotchas associated with buying a lens that was split from a kit? I'm looking to get the Canon 15-85 ef-s and if I go for the "split from a kit" option then it's around £100 cheaper.. but is it a false economy?

Buying from a retailer or an individual? If the former then you should be ok warranty wise and I'd check this with them first. If it's from an individual then you'll basically have no warranty unless you go back through them, I'd have thought.

Yep it is a retailer, and one that supposedly has a decent reputation (dunno if I can mention their name, but they're based in Devon and have an actual shop, though I'd be buying online)

I've just bought a 5D2 from that same shop, and they removed the 24-105 from the box. I wonder if it is the same...!

edit - just read - clearly not! However, it shows that it does happen and should be ok.

I'm selling one if your interested, would take £480. It came with a 7D but no longer need. If you are interested I can put it up in MM to keep it all above board. :)

Thanks, but I'd rather go brand new.

I'm leaning more and more towards the cheaper split-from-a-kit option though. That £100 would buy a me the lens hood, filter adapters etc. Thanks everyone for your opinions!
