Hi all,

We're looking at buying new carpet for our front room. First off any tips?

We're looking for a twist with slight speckle and stain guard - anything else we should look for? Its a large room (16' by 15.5'), so we need to get a 5m roll.

Should we go for somewhere like Carpet Right or Allied Carpets... or should we go for a local business?

We've had a quote from allied carpets which was 750 ish (based on 17.99 psm) and one for around 400 from a local business (based on 10.99 psm).

Its really hard to actually compare the carpets so any tips on things to look for would be great.

In my experience, a good local business will be better than the national chains, and probably cheaper too. Make sure you get decent underlay as well.

No tips on the actual carpet though, sorry.

This.

Local chains have some good deals too. We did four rooms, they knocked off the labour.

The last time I bought a carpet, 5M rolls were difficult to come by - 4M seems to be the norm these days. Before you pick one, make sure you can get it in 5M!

Be careful with Allied Carpets, they have a habit of loading your bill with stuff you didn’t ask for without telling you - i.e. door strips, gold underlay, protective coverings yada, yada ...
I went to two stores to get quotes and both times they added or upgraded items to the order when I had specifically said I didn't want them.

It was only when I asked to see the itemised quote did it become clear.

Hmmm ok thanks guys. Ive seen two different types of underlay... one was a solid style like this

the other like this

If you have uneven floorboards then the top one is best I'd have thought, also a tip ive picked is to tape up any gaps between your floorboards, this stops the carpet sagging into the gaps over time.

Allied carpet's prices are stupid

I wanted our whole house carpeted when we moved in, local place quoted £1950, then went to Allied who quoted £3100 for similar stuff, told them no chance as we had been quoted £1950 and they immediately offered to match it

Shows the amount of margins they have

We've got all our recent carpets from Allied, but as Rotty said, you have to do some SERIOUS haggling with them first. Even if they have their usual 30%+ off to start with, get more. Once you've done that, the service is decent, and you've got lots of carpets to choose from (even with the 5M roll thing).

my tip is buy cloud 9 underlay from tradepriced.co.uk (or something like that.. google cloud 9)...

then buy the carpet from the shop.

shops make hefty profit on underlay.

Cloud 9 stuff is great

How do you lay the underlay? Just wall to wall with no gaps? Not actually held down by anything is it?
