Ok, i have this lot in my basket at present
E6700 core 2 duo
8800 GTS 320mb
Geil 2 Gb memory.

Quezzy is, what mobo and HHD should I buy. i also have a very new enermax 600 watt PSU. Think this will be enough?

Many thanks for any advice.

Don't buy the E6700, its a waste of money. The E6600 a much much better choice. It overclocks well above 3.2GHz too.

I like that HDD choice above, its not the fastest hdd in the world but its very quiet.

Thanks for the replys guys. I'll have a look at all these options. I'm thinking about a new monitor as well. Probably the samsung bw226. :D

Awesome monitor. I suggest the 640MB 8800GS for it, though, and am sure that Jaffa Cake will agree. :)

Uh, they're not "better". It depends what you want from the drive.
WD's are as quiet as the Samsungs if that's the point you wish to make and they are faster than the samsungs - by a fair distance. What, you want a slower disk procured on parallel recording tech? They are seemingly less reliable also - not scientifically, but on user averagaes.

So how exactly are they not 'better'?

Care to cite your sources?

Ok, I've added the e6600 conroe instead of the 6700. now what else... :D
What case do you have? Tuniq Tower 4TW, if it'll fit. :)

Edit - Meh. Give us your budget, and list what parts you already have. I'll spec you a rig from scratch. :)

A thread I ran in the HDU forum. Now, what needs to be said is that you must exclude IBM from the survey, they had two models of HDU which were known to be faulty and which caused a LOT of failures (manufacturing design fault).

Then, simply take length of time they have been in the business into account. Whilst Seagate (yes, we all know about Maxtors over the last few years) appears to be one of the front runners, they are indeed the oldest manufacturer (inventing the desktop hard drive).

Samsung might not seem to have that high a number, but when the user base is considered (relatively low) coupled with age of the company in the industry (not that long), this would appear to clarify the picture. Further, warranty returns guarantee you a refurbished drive, something that is not necessarily the case for all other companies.

On performance, I don't need any sources. Perpendicular tech drives are about 10MB/s faster sustained than parallel tech drives of the same spindle speed. Samsungs are known for slower seeks (which can be blamed on the acoustic management). And if you really need a quiet PC, buy a HD enclosure.

Nice. I stand corrected. :)

Masslac: cheers mate! I was thinking about a better case this time, one with more room and better airflow. In terms of budget, I'm not sure but I'd like to future proof myself for a bit longer than last time :D AMD 3800 x2 and x1800xt system is chugging now.

This takes into account your current PSU, the extra HDD advice, and also that the Tuniq Tower is currently out of stock (see the Arctic HSF mentioned above). Not so different from our original suggestions, but at least it's all in one place now. :)
