i want ot get hold of a notebook for just surfing/some coding I have a decent spec PC for my gamming needs (xp on it) but would like to have either linux/xp running on it, but habe seen the mac book and like the look of them I could run OSX/XP/Linux right if i so choose?

are these decent machine for the my needs? or do i spend the same cash on a PC based notebook as I believe I could possibly get higher specified machine for the cash?

Anyone own one, care to share some thoughts/pictures?

cheers

macbooks are great value for money, they just dont start cheap so people assume theyre expensive, but if you compae them with similar spec pc laptops theyre quite good.

and parallels rocks if you have at least 1gb ram:D

You can get better spec'd PC notebooks for about the same price (1GB of RAM as default, dedicated graphics card etc.). But when you factor in other things such as the slot loading drive, MagSafe connector, iSight camera, iLife then it pretty much evens itself out :)

the only difference between the macbooks and the macbook pro's is the titanium casing/screen size and graphics card as you pointed out. if you're not playing games on it and plan on carrying it around w/ you i wouldn't get a pro, as imho, the price hike isn't worth it. if you want more info on a macbook you can find _loads_ of reviews on google.

omg that mac fast switching is awsome!!!

It's actually third party programs doing the work. Virtue desktops is free and does the virtual desktops and cool transitions. Parallels runs the other operating systems (kind of like VMWare), but unfortunately isn't free. I tend to run with OSX in my middle screen, full screen RDP to my home machine on the left one, and full screen XP in Parallels for .NET development on the right one. You really need 2 gig of ram if you are going to run parallels a lot though.

There are a few rumours that VMWare are porting their free VMWare Server software to OSX though, whick would be nice :)
