Hey, I'm looking at buying a synology DS 1513+. It's pricey but from reviews it's one of the best out there. Has anyone had one and did they think it's worth the price? I'm looking at using it as a media server as well as a nas system. I know it's probably cheaper to build one myself but I would want it to be just as quiet and energy efficient. So any alternatives are welcome.

You could go with a microservser running dsm but to be honest for plug and play you can't fault a nas drive.

As Gary said, why a five over 4 bay? Could even go for a high end two bay and use an expansion module down the line if need be. Such as the 713+

Or the 415 play which is also a media player?

+ 1 for the Synology NAS systems.

Thanks for all the replys, I was future proofing with the 5 bay NAS. I have lots of movies, about 200 dvds, so I'm planning on putting them all on so I can connect it to all my devices. Do you think it would be worth getting a smaller NAS system? Is the 415 play going to be better at streaming movies and music?

If this unit is operated the same as the 214 Play that I have then it is going to operate as a media player without any trouble at all.

I have the Synology DS413J with 4x2TB drives in it in RAID 6 (two disk failure protection giving a total of 3656.54GB of usable storage). A full DVD rip with makemkv (includes everything on the disk) is between 4 - 4.5GB.

You can do the maths as I am terrible at it. But the configuration I have should be more than enough to hold a couple times what I have on disc (when I can be bothered to start), even if I rip the disc in it's entirety.
