Ordered the same, gonna lap my tuniq tower :D

So what are you trying to do here, flatten and polish the bottom of a cooler? Don't forget you can use brasso, Silvo, T-Cut or a rubbing compound called Rouge instead of ultra fine paper. I probably wouldn't bother going finer than 1200 or 2000 then switching to a paste, only going on what I use to buff up a paint job on a car and that comes up to a fine gloss.

The main thing is to get the two surfaces flat and also to minimise the surface roughness. I've already used Brasso and it comes up so shiny you can see your face in it :p .

I used brasso on my cpu cooler, unfortunately the huge ruts in it are too deep to polish out..

It happened because i usualy clip the two sides of the scythe ninja on, then pull the top of it top make it go vertical then i clip the other two sides,

By doing this ive gone and pressed the cooler against the IHS too hard and its marked it :(

I found some 800 in a draw and bought a half sheet each of 1500 and 2000 from the local car spares shop for the princely sum of 86p. :D Could have had some 2500 if I'd wanted it but I thought that was going a bit far. Now I just need to rummage in the garage to find something flat to use as a base.

Your local halfords will have some, I needed some to level touch-up paint on my car, done the job a treat

//damn beaten to it :p

Trying to use some of the Halfords stuff atm and it's aright friggin pain - it curls up when I soak it in water and won;t stay flat - might have to resort to sticking it down with selloptape?

I wet the back of my paper as well as it helps it stick to the glass.

Because you don't want deep gouges in the copper base,

the smaller the grooves are the better the heat exchange between the chip and the cooler.

Ive just lapped my Ninja in its knocked 2oc off load :)

Not too impressive you might say, but i wanted to lap the cooler just to see how it would turn out :)

I intend to lap my akasa 955 cooler and my E6300 and see if there is much difference. The akasa especially seems to have quite a rough surface on it and there are some marks from installation. I'm curious to see if my E6300 is flat or not. It seems to be cooling fine at around 40C or less in CT.

I just drew across my cooler with a permanent marker,

then pulled it across the paper a few times to see how much was rubbed away, its the simplest way or showing whether its high on one side or not.

AKA a guide coat ;)
probobly the way forward to be honest.

you should never use 'wet and dry' - dry by the way.. always SOAK it with a touch of washing up liquid, and keep rinsing it.
