Buzzing/humming/vibrating like noise from PC

The title is the best way I can describe it. When I turn all my fans down/off there is a weird ambient humming or buzzing or vibrating from somewhere inside the pc. I think it could be my psu, but I'm not sure how to go about shutting it up .

It doesn't sound quite like a fan noise though is the weird thing. It's not a wind being moved sort of sound. If I've got my case fans turned up, I can't hear it, but when they're on minimum and I'm just web browsing, you can definitely hear it from where I'm sitting and it's a little annoying :(.

I've ruled out the GPU, CPU fan, and since when I turn up the case fans they don't sound like a louder version of this noise, I'm pretty sure it isn't them either.

Any advice would be great :).

do you have an xfx psu?

I do indeed, and had a thread about a ticking noise a while back, but this is a whole different noise

Any mechanical hard drives in your system ?

Yep, I do have one, but (and i know this sounds ever so ungraceful :p) when I was sticking my head inside the case to try and listen, I'm pretty sure the noise wasn't coming from the HDD bays, although I could be wrong

Have a wiggle and perhaps remove the drive :D

Right I've been in and played around, and there is a chance it may have been the HDD. If I touched it, it sounded really vibrat...vibratory (I'm not convinced that's a word :p), but i think it may have worked when i just removed the bay half way and replaced it (got a phantom NZXT enthusiast case), it may have cleared that up. Just a general humming from somewhere in there now, that I can't pinpoint again :p

That sounds very rude :D

Your just too fussy :D sometimes it can be a pain trying to pin point curtain vibrations and noises.

Maybe it was ;).

Yeah I am for sure :p. I mean my old build was waaaaaaaaayy louder than this one, and yet because this one is quieter, I'm now complaining that any sound at all is coming it. Never happy :D

What case are you using?

The NZXT Phantom enthusiast.

Didn't even read that far down fella. I was going to suggest checking to secure the HDD. Cases such as the Z9 have a single thumbscrew to "lock" the HDD in the cage. If you dont that small amount of play can cause noises.

Not sure the NZXT has that feature. Sorry to have wasted the OPs time.

The NZXT has plastic removable HDD/SSD caddies with these securing pins on either side. An absolute pain to try and fit them in properly it was :(. The SSD is easier as it screws into the base, but the HDD was rather annoying and caused some thumb and finger pain too :p

It is a samsung hard drive. People seem to be guessing my parts a lot recently :p. Are you all watching me right now? ;)

I have the same problem with mine too, and i have 2x samsung F3's when they are paired for some weird reason they making a very loud vibration noise.

google "samsung rhythmic humming" or something similar, and you'll soon see what the source of the noise is. In some cases it is worse than others. My Samsungs were just awful in my aluminium Lian-Li.

Hmmm, maybe it was because on my old antec 300 the case fans were reasonably loud, and so I couldn't hear the HDD at all. It's not unbearable, and i think since I fiddled with it like RJC suggested it may have disappeared. But it may still be there as there are other noises emanating from the case, but as he said, I could be there for months trying to pinpoint every single noise inside the case...need to stop being fussy i guess :p

Yes, my PC was very very quiet, and the noise was awful. I got a 1GB Seagate replacement, and silence was restored. Beautiful drive, no hum at all, and pretty quiet as well on read/write.

But in a noisier system, with case fans etc, they may be fine. Indeed the same drives are now in my monster Akasa Eclipse case, and in that I can hear some slight hum but it is fine. Fan noise is the loudest noise.

If i can definitely nail down that the noise in my case is the HDD, which I could probably do just by unplugging it and booting up, but right now, can't muster the effort, maybe tomorrow, then I will definitely consider a replacement drive (this one is 3+ years old now too), and a fair few people are saying the Seagate's are really good drives and so that would be my first consideration :). Don't want any of this eco drive rubbish either ;). Lol.

we're like...telepathic...

or...

maybe we're just stalkers =x

And maybe I'd like it...
