Buzzing sounds with new PSU

Hi,

I recently installed a Lian Li RS 1000W RS Hub to replace an old Corsair TX650M which was working fine but I needed a PSU for my kids PC so thought I may as well future proof mine and hand the Corsair down.

Ever since installing the Lian Li PSU, I have been hearing whining/buzzing noises, particularly on white backgrounds. This sounds a bit like a HDD seeking and I actually unplugged my old HDD at first to check it wasn't that. Just moving the mouse cursor over white text on the blue background here constantly makes the noise.

I understand this can happen for a few reasons but as I'm going to have to send this back as it's driving me crazy is it totally pot luck or is there anything I should be looking out for in a replacement?

I'm currently using a Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 9070 XT with a i7-12700KF so know I don't need anywhere near 1000W for now if going lower is the better option for now.

the dreaded coil whine. it's luck of the draw unfortunately.
swapping out the psu should help...even with another unit from the same range

Thanks, not really looked at PSU market for a while and never had something this bad so didn't know if brands/models were more susceptible. I'll have a look round for a replacement.

No it's nearly always luck of the draw. Even swapping out the unit with the same model (IE in your case another lian li rs1000 hub) can eliminate coil whine.

I think I must be immune to coil whine, as in all the years spent playing with technology I still dont think I have ever heard it! Im either lucky, going deaf, or just very tolerant!

Dunno how much is related but had a issue with a coil whine from a rx9070xt in a few games, ignored for a while, changed some settings in Adrenalin (like colour temperature to 5800) and that dropped the coil whine. At least I cannot hear it anymore.

Funny, I just popped this PSU into my rig today and ran a quick stress test to make sure all is fine and immediately I was hit with a wall of buzz from the unit. FFS, my old Seasonic didn't even so much as whimper, until I found it just didn't quite have enough juice for a 9070XT.

Did you get a replacement @bungler ? If you did, was it any better?

Indeed, but I was baulking at the cost of the Seasonic and Antec (Seasonic made) ones and saw some good things in this section of the forum regarding the Lian Li, a brand I have always associated with quality having used a bunch of their cases in the past.

I dunno what path to take tbh. Stick an order in for a different model/brand, or just go for an exchange and be without PC for a few days. It's the ballache of taking all the cables out and back in that makes the whole process with a PSU an irritating upgrade.

Dropped the shop a web note, will see what they say next week.

The Antec HCG I got to update my system, along with a 9070XT, appears to be a good un, not a peep out of it and quieter than my ancient H100 AIO pump. Only negative is the cables single strand plastic coated (comes with combes but meh) and not braided like my old XFX (Seasonic made) unit. Luckily I have a windowless black box to hide it in with okay-ish cable management :p.

I've a Lian Li SX 1200W and I've used an RS 1000W in another build, zero problems with either one.

As has been mentioned, it's unfortunately very much the luck of the draw as to whether these problems crop up or not and to what degree. You're always going to find anecdotal evidence regarding any one product, but ultimately you have people spending fortunes on top tier PSU's or flagship graphics cards like the 5090 Astral who can end up dealing with the same things.

@OP: I'd see if they'd be willing to send out a new RS unit as a direct replacement, maybe ask if it'd be possible to leave the cables in your case so you're not fussing about too much, I'd be surprised if they said yes but there's no harm in trying.

Couldn't sleep. The sound of the coil whine has been haunting me :D So did some more research and ended up putting an order in for the Antec HCG 850 Pro, as there is no way this Lian Li is staying and I'll need to replace it with something when that goes back.

Such a shame, but like others have said, it's just a lottery and I hope to win it with the Antec as ticks all the boxes the Lian Li did, albeit a slightly lower total power output but my system doesn't need it and with GPUs and RAM costing what they do I doubt I'll be upgrading and needing more power any time soon :(
