Buzzing that seems to be related to my GPU.

I have over the past few months been putting a new rig based on spec below:

Intel Core i7 920
Corsair H50-1
6GB PC-12800 Corsair C7
Gigabyte EX58-UD5
Crucial C300 256 Gb
Highpoint Rocket 620 Sata III Controller
Zotac GTX 280 1024 MB
Asus Xonar DX
Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 550W
Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit

After I put Windows 7 on it yesteraday followed by crysis I noticed that I was getting noises coming from the PSU when doing assesment for the Windows Experience Index and also playing Crysis itself.

However when I replaced my Gtx280 with a spare 8400 GS the noise stopped with both the psu listed above and a spare 620w I have.

Does the above just point to me needing a better PSU? If so would a 650w be enough?

That's a decent machine, wouldn't want a failing PSU to take anything else out. I always advise people not to skimp on the PSU, buy a bit more than you need right now. You could probably get away with a 650W, but why not get a 750W?

That supply is more than capable, I would say its capacitor whine from the GTX - This is common and nothing to really worry about, if not a little annoying.

Yea. 550W would be cutting a bit close for overclocking the i7 750 to 4GHz along with a GTX280. I would get a decent 650w/750w like Biffa suggested if I were you.

Or you could stick with your Dark Power 550w, sell your GTS280 and upgrade to a HD5850/5870 (which uses much less power and have dx11 support).

Even with overclocking the I7 I would be supprised if that rig was even close to 550watts, mind you im running mine on a two year old 460w with an overclocked q6600 I can also stretch the legs on the 5850 to over 1ghz core with a voltage bump and be perfectly stable in terms of power (drawing bearly 370watt at the wall).

I would try the coolermaster psu calculator which should show you as using around 400watts at load, well within range of what your supply is capable of.

Just had a go with the calculator suggested by Biffa and came out with 548w. So I guess that I am getting the buzzing due the psu having to work at near full capacity.

haha its a gamble, Ive found the coolermaster one to be pretty accurate, at load it suggests my system is 380 watts which is about 20watts over what I am actually consuming.

Heh the coolermaster one is licenced from the one I linked to :p It even says so at the bottom of the page.

Anyway if you add it all up on the Coolermaster one it comes to 498W for it overclocked to 3.6Ghz @ 1.4V which is a fairly average overclock for an i7. And we still don't know he full spec of his machine.

How many fans do you have?
Any SATA drives as well as your SSD?
Any USB devices plugged in?
Number and type of optical drives?

Only he knows excatly his spec and can plug all the info in we are just all guessing.

Plus a PCI-E Sound card and a Sata III controller card.

Knocking on the door of that 550watts by the looks of things then :)

Just as a quick edit, is the squeeling all the time or in game menus and alike?

During game menus, in the game and during the Windows Experience Assessment. Also at one point I got a different noise when I plugged a 4 gb flash drive in while the pc was sitting at the desktop.

I have never in my time experienced cap whine from any PSU or GPU so am at a loss at what to say, I would try it with another machine/psu and see what happens. By the looks of things though you are running that PSU pretty close to the limit so it could be that the whine might be the psu talking to you telling you that its not happy.

However at the same time it is not uncommon for gfx cards, both ATI and NV to whine, so if you are stable and happy with performance I would think about leaving said whine alone and enjoying your new toy.

Nor had I until I built this one. Given that the card is ok in my other machine that is based on a Q9450 with a 650w psu, I am beginning think it is just the psu being too close to the limit.

The whine is such that it would drive me potty if I leave it as it is.

Its more than likely whine from the psu screaming for help... why not swap the psu's around? Seems like the easy solution providing that there arn't crazy amounts of other components in the other machine.
