Bye Bye Spore

Our colleagues over at Next-Gen have been in touch with EA in the US regarding yesterday's reported Spore delay, which emerged from US mag Game Informer.

"There seems to be some misinformation flying around," explained a rep in a phone interview. "Nothing's changed since our call on May 8, where [CEO] John Riccitello specifically said that we were moving Spore from fiscal '08 to early fiscal '09."

EA's fiscal 2009 runs from April 2008 through March 2009.

During that May earnings call, Riccitello stated, "...Spore is a title we have enormous confidence in. I've had the chance to review the title three times in the my short return to EA and it looks fantastic. I will also tell you that it's right up [to] the bubble in Q4 [of fiscal '08], if not sometime in early fiscal '09, so we don't feel comfortable in forecasting it."

But I thought you knew? Because EA are big and bad and nasty and stuff :(

They are :) and I know **** really.

Spore is one of those truly innovative games, it's been quite a while since there has been any innovation in PC gaming really, but I can imagine EA wanting them to push development for an true online section of the game.

They've said before that EA Games aren't doing to well at the moment, and I am sure they have said that the MMO/on line gaming is where they hope to make their money in the future.

Since spore originally was not a true online game, I can only guess that EA games asked the team if they could incorporate any true online play into the game, granted that will be quite cool, then again may be completely false.

Just my thoughts anyway.

Is EA Games not seperate to EA Publishing? I thought EA had a publishing deal with them but had no part in the actual development?

I can understand EA Games not doing too well, but as a publisher, they must be raking it in.

I'm not sure really, just been reading a few sources and USAtoday says this

EA owns all the rights to Spore, and profit margins

Either way I can't wait for this game :)

Maxis is an EA owned studio. So EA own all the rights to games Maxis develop. It's quite different to being purely a publisher like with Crysis and the Half Life 2 games.
