Hi

I just came across this clever thing called Bye Bye Standby. Has anyone else seen this?

I put it in this sub-forum as expect many of you have plenty of devices which all sit there 24hrs a day, either on or on standby. TV's, pre amps, power amps, subs, HTPC's etc etc. This could save you a bit on those increasing leccy bills.
It costs about £20 for the pack with 1 remote and 3 plugs, good for loads of devices if you use multiple plug socket things.
There's even an add-on which lets you control in all from anywhere online

Q: What is Bye Bye Standby®?
A: Bye Bye Standby® is a brand new energy saving solution designed to reduce daily energy consumption of electrical devices. Bye Bye Standby® works by completely cutting power to the devices plugged into it when they’re not in use, thus saving the power that devices would otherwise have consumed in Standby Mode. Bye Bye Standby® is a new way to save energy, carbon emissions and money.

Q: How does Bye Bye Standby® work?
A:Bye Bye Standby® (BBSB) is a device that connects between the wall socket and an appliance which consumes energy unnecessarily. This could be an appliance with a standby mode, such as a TV, or an appliance which is always on when it could be off, such as a printer or wireless router. The BBSB device allows the user to have easy control over all these types of appliances. When they no longer need to use these appliances, such as when they are out or asleep, a single button can be pressed which physically disconnects the wasteful appliance so it no longer consumes energy. Pressing the button again reconnects all the appliances.

Opinions?

Another remote control? I don't like it just for that reason. There are other devices, multiway blocks, that detect when one device (the tv mainly) is on standby and cuts the power to all the others. Now that I like for the simplicity and the lack of additional remote controls.

Intellipanel make one similar to what I have described.

but surely using this does exactly the same as turning the socket off, therefore defeating the point of standby lol, had an e-mail from a well known electronics website this morning about a similar one which just uses the appliances remote and that said that the power was cut right down to nothing, so if no power is getting to it, that means it's not on standby it's completely off

I have recently seen one of these that works with your current remote control for the appliance.

So it's a set of RF remote sockets? They have been around for years and most certainly aren't "brand new". I've used them on table lamps etc for years.

I got a free 3-way plug from some electrical advertising stand. It is sensitive to the 'main' plug u put into it, if that device if put on standby it turns off the extentions (can be used with multi-extention as well) which leaves only 1 on stand by so u can turn them all on again with just 1 button / remote what ever that controls our main device (Tv/amp or computer etc)

That is the point.

Completely off means that the unit isn't drawing any power thus saving your bill, and the planet if you belive in global warming though the greenhouse effect.

My sockets for the TV and amps and such are behind the sideboard so turning off at the wall and unplugging simply isn't an option.

I got a set of these free from my bank when i moved house and i must say they are pretty useful especially if your plug sockets are hard to reach.

That's one of the benefits. I watch most of my movies at my best friends house where the home cinema wiring is tucked way behind amp.

I'd also have it hooked up to a lamp or 2 to pop them on and off as I please.

Call me old fashioned, but you could just get up...

What if you can't get to the Socket without moving the TV and its Cabinet away from the wall?? or pulling you'r sofa away from the wall?!?!?... :p

or (if like me) you a bit of a Lazy Git!!! :D:p

Surely these devices will be using power aswell though as they are sitting in standby waiting for the remote to power them back up or for the main device to power up again.

May be worth while if you have a few devices attached to it but I wouldn't be surprised if the device itself uses around the same power as a modern TV in standby.

I use something similar for certain appliances such as my amp, DVD player etc etc, Mine use the X10 protocol which means I can control them with my pronto.

the units use less power than the appliances and allow me to turn them on and off by remote, which at least one (my CD player) wouldn't normally cos it doesn't have a standby mode.

I doubt it uses much compared to TVs etc.

TVs use some of the order of Watts of power. No way does a receiver needed that much power. They may even be battery powered as converted ac to a small amount of DC isn't efficient and wastes power

i have one which works by my remote. so if i press 'on' on my remote it will sense it and turn on the power - then i can use my remote as normal. when i turn my tv off it then waits for a bit then cuts power to everything :D

Surely the unit itself must be in standby waiting for the RF/IR command to switch the mains back on to the other devices? LOL.

Obviously it will be, but having a tiny low power reciever on standby beats the hell out of having your TV, Set top box, Video, Surround amp etc all on standby. a lot of even very recent electronics consume silly amounts of power on standby.
