Army :(

You're going to have the time of your life, I know everyone says it but make the most of basic training - it'll never be quite like it ever again.

Best of luck, might see you around some day.

Are you out of basic training already?! I thought you only just joined? How short is basic training?

Are you in the armed forces?

Why not?

Not trying to be confrontational, genuinely interested.

I just feel that if I was to risk never seeing my family or friends again, it would need to be for an exceptional cause.

I'm probably just selfish though.

I'm not trying to take anything away from what you and the OP are doing btw. I think its awesome, just not something that I could do. :)

I hope you enjoy your time in training, it'll be tough quite often, especially this time of year. Things will be different when you join your unit, initially you may feel a little alone as the new soldier but you'll settle in quickly. Public duties (guarding Buck house, windsor castle) are ok really, better than I imagined but I'm happy the Guards do it more than I do.
The infantry do around 6 months of training before joining their unit, a bit less if you're immediatly up to standard fitness wise - was 22weeks when I joined.

Mr tommo, although any death is one too many the chances are hugely on your side that you will live, it is dangerous but the army takes the upmost care to mitigate the risks, soldiers are not cannon fodder - we're too expensive to throw away.

That's where the difference lies! I see the Afghanistan as an exceptional cause. Even if I didn't, I'd want to go out there and do what I could to make it better for the guys who are on the search and destroy missions.
