C&C: Red Alert 3 Copy Protection Plans

This will be on torrent sites within days of release making the DRM worthless absolutely worthless

Some good games out for PC and consoles this autumn/winter. I may use the money for Tomb Raider & Fifa on the PS3 and ignore this.

Sounds like one step forward, two steps back to be honest. Did EA not see how epically Bioshock failed with it's online authorisations, took me days to get that game to work and I don't think I was the only one.

That the problem a lot of people had problems luckly i never, it can and does p*** people off when they brought the game and having problems and the pirates don't.

If this gets played as long as RA2 I'd be amazed if anybody *doesn't* manage to reach 5 installs and by that point there's probably more chance of an asteroid collision wiping us all out than EA actually continuing to have the activation servers on :p

That made me laugh

The installs are reclaimed everytime you uninstall the game!

It's just so not everyone in your town/city has the game installed just from your copy - it doesn't need the DVD in to play after all.

Hardly "renting" the game.

What happens if you have a problem on your PC and you need to format? Do you want to spend ages uninstalling everything first? What about if your hard drive dies?
Yes, these things aren't likely, but having a limit here only hurts legit users! I was downloading spore before it was even released. It uses the same DRM.
Legit users have to worry about how many times they install, I can do whatever I want.

Yes, you can't play online, but a simple cd-key check deals with that. Its nothing to do with this 5 install limit, its still going off the key.

Look at Stardock. Gal Civ 2, Sins of a Solar Empire. No copy protection on the games, and the usual key check for online play. And its one of the best selling games of the year.

No, it sounds rubbish. Years ago you used to buy a game, install and not need the dvd. Take it to a friends, if they liked it, they bought it. Nobody complained about piracy then...

years ago games didn't cost $20 million + to make and you didn't face the prospect of going under if one of your games sold poorly because it was pirated to ****

But thats just a waste of time. If I'm formatting my PC, its because its a quick and simple fix. Just nuke the hard drive and start again, hardly takes any time. But with this new copy protection, I would have to uninstall everything installed on my PC before formatting? Who wants to do that?

how many games do have installed at any one time? taking 10mins max to uninstall say 10 games would hardly be the end of the world and if you couldn't spare 10mins for whatever reason then you'll still have 4 installs so theres still not a problem

TBh don't see why they even bother. They know it will be cracked within a few months. They just make it harder for everyone!

Its the future of PC gaming so get used to it or go back to your consoles. The extreme PC pirating is the cause of this. Only people who will be unhappy are the same greedy ones who think they have the right to pirate everything for nothing and caused this to happen.

EA even remove the Disc check which for them is astonishing.

Whats the issue here they let you install it on 5 different PC's 5 times until you have to contact customer support. If it were a console game you would need a copy per machine regardless of if it was the same location or not.

If PC piracy was low do you think they would have even gone to this trouble. The alternative is no PC games as why on earth would any business spend millions making games that get pirated to bits.

this doesnt even affect downloading pirates ...its to annoy legit buyers.

10 games uninstalled in 10 mins?

freecell/hearts/internet backgammon/internet checkers/internet hearts/internet spades/minesweeper/pinball/solitaire/spider solitaire.

only if thats ^^ your games list :p

EA said:
As you might imagine, I'm a lot less respectful of those people who take the position that they will illegally download a game simply because it has DRM.

Got to love how he uses the word respect, what about respect for your customers? It's completely clear from his statement that he knows the game will be pirated regardless of any DRM they use to copy protect it, so he must know this is only going to be an issue for people who actually buy it.

Cannot see why anyone would argue with this - just people who want an excuse to pirate games....

And to be honest there seem too many that support piracy in the Pc section of this forum...

People moaning about having to uninstall all your games if you plan to format your hard drive, think of the accumulated time saved by not having to swap disks when playing the games that have this type of protection.

Agree I hate having CD everywhere cause I never remember to put them away love the freedom of disk free gaming

The pirates are the ones who don't care because it'll be cracked anyway as soon as it's out. The only people this is going to affect in any way are the people who actually buy it, it's pretty unfair in that regard.

I don't think anybody would have a problem with it if the system actually worked.

Something needs to be done to encourage me not to pirate, but DRM and stupidly high costs is keeping me from buying most games.

Besides i'll never buy an EA game. There company swallowing, poor game producing pile of crap.

Steam worked well for anti piracy.
