I love the Red Alert games, but RA3 sucks, avoid at all costs. As mentioned SupCom is awesome.

Dawn of War Anthology would be a good starting point, it's fairly forgiving in the way that the C&C games are.

Another vote for Company of Heroes. The SF aspect of the DoW series didn't really appeal to me personally. I'd also suggest you try Men of War. Less focus on base building, more on individual unit control.

Sudden Strike II is the only RTS I still play regularly. I know III is out too. It's worth a look.

How has no one mentioned World In Conflict + Soviet Assault? Bloody brilliant game!
One of the few RTS games of late where I've bothered to complete the single player campaign lol.
